2020-03-30 record of tides ’black album’ out april 24 on kreislauf.org

it is our massive pleasure to announce the upcoming release of 'black album', the sixth full length album by record of tides. the album will be put out once again by the hamburg based netlabel kreislauf.org and will be available digitally and for free on april 24, 2020. kreislauf.org has already released the reissue of record of tides´ debut 'timber' from 2004 in 2014, the follow up 'vessel' in 2016, the 2017 album ‘solna’ and the 2018 album ‘endurance’.

‘black album’ has been programmed, recorded and produced between autumn 2016 and spring 2019. the album will feature 10 tracks and is mostly inspired by aphex twin and boards of canada (also some autechre for deconstructed parts) again, there are no guitars or any acoustic instruments on the album. the album is prominent for bocesque sounds and melodies while contrasting complex beat programming. (piayda has called them ‘horror vacui beats’ in a forum.)

tracks like ‘snow_1-7_140’ and ‘cereal reduction’ have been released already via ‘granada interface ep’ on vinyl and dvd back in 2017.

some new tracks have already appeared in record of tides live sets of the last three years, sometimes in alternative versions. you may like to check the bootlegs and snippets floating in the net for new sounds.

kreislauf.org label boss andreas buttweiler and sven piayda have been discussing the holding of the release date (which had been around behind closed doors before) in times of the on-going crises. both agreed that releasing the album digitally only does not need any close distance personal contact. also enjoying new music is primarily something personal you probably do for yourself, in your living room, your car, via headphones in the garden or doing sports. this release does not conflict with current social distancing rules. even feedback, discussions and reviews usually appear in digital media.

‘black album’ will be available on april 24, 2020 via kreislauf.org and contributed via archive.org and sonicsquirrel.net.

recently, no live dates, listening events or online activities are scheduled. sven is recently back in studio to finish long time projects as ‘yellowcake’ and ‘collected riffing works 2’. also a series of live bootlegs (some even reconstructed and/or extended) are supposed to be released. within the art studio piayda is continuing work on the ‘multiverse’ show (no fixed date yet).

zany music has preponed the release of MCPMF ‘thug life’ to offer more material for you to enjoy at home. it is available via /CAMP now. next to the new hip hop mixtape, you can still download the 2017 compilation album ‘driftings’ by record of tides as well as the 2010 AESTATE live gig at audiodigitale. additionally you can watch the ruhrpreis trailer and you can access all text available for the 2018 piayda solo show ‘adaptation (you´re mine)’.
the /CAMP is usually only available and accessible to people owning artworks by sven piayda or records (physical or digital) by AESTATE, record of tides and affiliated projects, so we can offer changing content even after purchasing a certain piece. now we are opening the /CAMP for everyone to download and enjoy the exclusive content. to access please register via studio[at]svenpiayda.com.
(your email will not given to third parties or used for newsletters or any other purpose.)

all about the release: back in august 2018 sven piayda reported in his blog about the story of this photograph:
one of my friends asked where this well furnished interior was taken (his guess was america…
(it was actually taken in an apartment in whitsable, england during some days off in summer 2018)) and that it looks like the album cover form a hip suburban rapper. well, so this is what the cover looks like now. now I need to work on my rap skills to blow the scene away… I could do some lame cloud rap on idm beats… maybe an new electronica album is more likely - or maybe post rock? you´ll never know.
however, inspired by the fictional cover and serious interest in rap and hip hop music, piayda has been working on a mixtape for months. it is mainly based upon tracks which had been frequently listened to during work out and sports. it features quite popular, rare and less known hip hop related music which is merged into a full set. the artist or stage name MCPMF as well as the title 'thig life' are actualy not to be taken serious as they play with rap clichés. nevertheless, the mixtape is a serous interest in hip hop and rap music. the mixtape is available as mp3 and downloadable in the /CAMP exclusively.

still on: record of tides´ recent albums ‘collected riffing works’ and ‘endurance’ are still available from zany music and kreislauf.org. you may like to check tem out among further releases over at archive.org.

you may also like to read michael schreiber´s review on 'endurance':
very nice - the drum sounds with a touch of ‘visage’ sound but a little fatter in combination with an interesting flow through the track. [...] enjoyed listening to some very good music there. besides ‘reinform plus’ my favourite tracks are: ‘fulerum county' for the awesome bass line/sound, ‘perseids’ for the silence that lives in this track and ‘care’ has a sweet flow between the fat drum/percussion line and the melody/bass harmony.
a great start into the weekend while listening with a fresh cup of coffee.

michael schreiber aka all notes off created a beautiful rework of the record of tides track ‘mountains’ as taken from ‘collected riffing works’. the quite spontaneous production and release is promoted by a video which is also directed by schreiber. the rework follows the given minimalism of the original track while adding english as well as german vocals. sven piayda announced to be stunned by the rework and hopes for more treatments of his tracks by schreiber and others. he also admits ‘mountains’ to be the least track he would have expected for treatment. a remix/rework compilation might be released when enough great material is available. additionally, he is believed to be recently working on ‘collected riffing works 2’.

more or less exactly ten years ago zany music released AESTATE´s long time project ‘patch’, the collection of remixes (mainly) of tracks from the ‘superflat’ album. you can download the remix album for free from zany music via the zany music site or via aestate-online.com. it features ten tracks at a lengh of 46 minutes.

back in 2018 zany music released the ‘petrichor ep’, a collection of remixes of this calm track. it is also available from zany music and archive.org. both remix releases feature treatmants by artists as rand0mf0rm, kill_scrxxn (also credited as droelf), chris huff and sven piayda.

remixing one another appears to a great way for electronic artists to interact while practicing insolation. recently, record of tides and zany music to not have any media to offer, but we would like to put your attention to the free available stems as delivered by battles (rmx.bttls.com) and gallops (instagram.com/g_a_l_l_o_p_s).

the studio is recently still busy in rendering long time projects, actually sven is alone in studio, but you can still contact the office. we are recently discussing a concept for the instagram stories: sven is supposed to guide through his own art collection giving info and telling background stories for every piece. still, this idea is in the making.

#letstalkaboutart

update 2020-04-03: the #letstalkaboutart insta webisodes idea is getting more and more serious. we hope to come up with something soon. for the meantime, follow sven piayda in instagram.

update 2020-04-03: even if all cultural places have closed and it is tricky to fill the schedules recently the studio is in contact with a curator to place the upcoming 'needle in the multiverse' show. for the main video projection, different sequences are combined for a loose and abstract narration. restored from old production files the video will now also feature a high definition sequence of 'lightyears' showing the voyager space probe rushing by. more stills from the on-going production are supposed to come up in the future.

update 2020-04-07: as you can read in the journal the #letstalkaboutart web show has been dismissed. after working for weeks on the concept, the show is not going to be produced or screened now. also rumours of a podcast will remain rumours as not production is announced or scheduled. but there are also silver linings: the electric café electronic music group is recently working on a potcast series with piayda involved. the result may be exciting, more info hopefully soon.

update 2020-04-07: piayda is mainly working on the upcoming solo show ‘needle in the multiverse’ which will feature a sound installation to be composed of sound works as well of music by record of tides. within this production the studio is considering to release the ‘if and only if mash-up’ as played during the solo show at SG1 suisburg via /CAMP. this is still an idea to be played around with, more soon.

it is our massive pleasure to announce that the studio is now offering a memory game featuring sven piayda´s tableau works as pictured on the cards. the memory game has been produced by ravensburger on demand, the german traditional company ravensburger has originally developed the memory game and has put it on the market first.

the piayda memory game features 72 cards (i.e. 36 different tableaus on 36 pairs), a tin box and a booklet explaining the memory game rules in different languages, all in ravensburger quality, see picture above. please note: this version is not a regular release by ravensburger, it is not available from the company.

the memory game is one of many ideas of the studio to create output next to artworks or art shows and is now entering new contexts. also, the studio is recently working on a variation of the memory game to play an important part in an upcoming solo show. you will find out about the development of this new game here.

the memory game is available exclusively from the studio. if you are interested in getting your version, please mail to studio[at]svenpiayda.com, also to get info on the price, shipping cost and delivery time span. have a look at more pictures of the piayda memory game over at the studio purchase site.more info and pictures over at studio.svenpiayda.com.

our friend and collaborator karla köhler will open her 2020 solo show at edel extra, nürnberg on april 22. next to making her production process transparent she will also offer a workshop. the show will also feature the collaborative work ‘granada interface (the lost tapes)’, a video for record of tides directed by sven piayda exploring köhler´s urban world designs. not only because of the collaboration, this show is highly recommended:
for years, the work of karla köhler has been the graphic reduction of urban architecture and its implementation through painting and media such as 3D printing and laser technology. in this exhibition the artist presents the for the first time open the working process of her urban world series and makes the details and steps of their work visible. some heavy guitar sounds have also apperad already in the 2019 live performances, actually none of them had been taken from 'collected riffing works'. however, record of tides may appear live in january 2020 again. more soon.

2020-03-14 show cancellations and on-going studio work
caused by the on-going corona virus crisis and the general lockdown of schools and museums as well as further public spaces and institutions we have to admit that all shows are postponed or cancelled until further notice. in this context we would like to support the lockdown decisions and would ask you to stay home and reduce personal contact to a minimum.

the studio has decided to reduce to skeleton staff, which means that piayda will take care of recent productions to be finished. the studio is recently working on high definition video sequences, sound as well as a ‘multiverse memory’ for an upcoming solo show.
you can still contact chris huff for future projects, the office will remain available until further notice.

also the studio will place video documentaries to compensate the impossibility to visit galleries or museums. next to this, a bunch of digital releases are supposed to come up via /CAMP and collaborative netlabels. we hope to be productive in the upcoming weeks even if we take this historic event very serious. this is a new situation for all of us.

please act responsively, take care!

at first, have a look at the most recent documentary of ‘if and only if’ at SG1 in duisburg. please check and like facebook.com/svenpiaydastudio for upcoming documentary features as well as up-to-date news.

the studio is recently working on a larger project: the next solo show is supposed to be called 'needle in the multiverse'. next to sound and a modified memory game (still in the making) there will be a high definition video featuring abstract and cryptic sequences playing with images from '2001', 'futurama', science and art history. for this projection, the studio is doing a reproduction of 'cassini' (2017) which was produced in pal quality to be combined for the ongoing 'golden record' monitor based video installation. cross your fingers, redoing the sequence is a bunch of work. the result will be outstanding!

update 2020-03-17: the studio is recently doing the rendering of the new 'cassini' sequence. things look good so far, please cross your fingers.

update 2020-03-17: for the upcoming solo show the studio is discussing and working on a bunch of material showing the unshowable. as there already is a sequence exloring the universe from the outside, there is recently not sequence showing the multiverse in general. now that the universe is defined, the studio is recently working on defining the multiverse. cross your fingers!

update 2020-03-18: caused by the on-going lockdown situation sven piayda is recently working in studio on finishing long-time projects. this is not about new music but mixdowns and renderings of off/on-projects to be finished. ‘yellowcake’ (working title) is supposed to be an album (or collection of tracks) consisting mainly of sample based productions. also the work ‘collected riffing works II’ is going on with mixing and working on post-production adding an album to CRW I with a similar style. recently there are no release dates fixed for these projects and there is no plan to put out the music now. additionally there are no live dates or listening events. there have been rumours about a live date in may but the dates have been turned down before. there are plans to release a hip hop mixtape via /CAMP, also kreislauf.org is believed to be working on something.

2020-03-12 ruhr gallery group show ‘schöner!’ postponed

as ludwig van beethoven would celebrate this 250th birthday in 2020, the ruhr gallery/galerie an der ruhr planned to honour the composer with a group show. the exhibition was supposed curated by klaus wiesel, who requested the studio to create and contribute a work to the show. the new sound piece 'future perfect (lvb#10)' was supposed to be exhibiteted at the group show.

the show opening was scheduled for sunday, march 22, but the gallery heads have decided to cancel the opening because of the on-going danger of spreading the sars-cov-2 virus. the opening is supposed to be delayed to a later date, the press release announces an opening in a ‘warmer season’ which indicates a date in late spring or summer.
the studio supports the decision as we are recently facing a difficult situation dealing with a new virus. however, piayda´s sound piece ‘future perfect (lvb#10)’ is available from the studio and will be exhibited later, there may even be enough time to reconsider options of presentation and offering vinyl editions, maybe even in record stores.

in his work 'future perfect (lvb#10)', sven piayda dedicates himself to beethoven's unfinished 10th symphony, which was repeatedly sought to be completed - most recently with the help of artificial intelligence. piayda's version translates the fragmentary scores into synthetic sound, which seems as futuristic as it is out-dated. thus his version explicitly does not present itself as a questionable attempt at perfection, but as a kind of remix or free interpretation, which comes across like a soundtrack to a dystopian science fiction film - almost as if daniel lopatin (oneothrix point never) had composed a new film score for 'clockwork orange'. kubrik already used beethoven's music for his film.

it is our massive pleasure to announce that the studio is now offering a memory game featuring sven piayda´s tableau works as pictured on the cards. the memory game has been produced by ravensburger on demand, the german traditional company ravensburger has originally developed the memory game and has put it on the market first.

the piayda memory game features 72 cards (i.e. 36 different tableaus on 36 pairs), a tin box and a booklet explaining the memory game rules in different languages, all in ravensburger quality, see picture above. please note: this version is not a regular release by ravensburger, it is not available from the company.

the memory game is one of many ideas of the studio to create output next to artworks or art shows and is now entering new contexts. also, the studio is recently working on a variation of the memory game to play an important part in an upcoming solo show. you will find out about the development of this new game here.

the memory game is available exclusively from the studio. if you are interested in getting your version, please mail to studio[at]svenpiayda.com, also to get info on the price, shipping cost and delivery time span. have a look at more pictures of the piayda memory game over at the studio purchase site.more info and pictures over at studio.svenpiayda.com.

the studio is recently working on a larger project: the next solo show is supposed to be called 'needle in the multiverse'. next to sound and a modified memory game (still in the making) there will be a high definition video featuring abstract and cryptic sequences playing with images from '2001', 'futurama', science and art history. for this projection, the studio is doing a reproduction of 'cassini' (2017) which was produced in pal quality to be combined for the ongoing 'golden record' monitor based video installation. cross your fingers, redoing the sequence is a bunch of work. the result will be outstanding!

back in august 2018 sven piayda reported in his blog about the story of this photograph: one of my friends asked where this well furnished interior was taken (his guess was america…) and that it looks like the album cover form a hip suburban rapper. well, so this is what the cover looks like now. now I need to work on my rap skills to blow the scene away… I could do some lame cloud rap on idm beats… maybe an new electronica album is more likely - or maybe post rock? you´ll never know.
however, inspired by the fictional cover and serious interest in rap and hip hop music, piayda has been working on a mixtape for months now which is supposed to be released via /CAMP soon. it features quite popular, rare and less known hip hop related music which is merged into a full set. when the mixtape (available as mp3) will be downloadable in the /CAMP, you will find out here first.

our friend and collaborator karla köhler will open her 2020 solo show at edel extra, nürnberg on april 22. next to making her production process transparent she will also offer a workshop. the show will also feature the collaborative work ‘granada interface (the lost tapes)’, a video for record of tides directed by sven piayda exploring köhler´s urban world designs. not only because of the collaboration, this show is highly recommended:
for years, the work of karla köhler has been the graphic reduction of urban architecture and its implementation through painting and media such as 3D printing and laser technology. in this exhibition the artist presents the for the first time open the working process of her urban world series and makes the details and steps of their work visible. (edel extra press release)
additionally, köhler and piayda are recently working on new collaborative works. more soon.
all info at the bottom of this post.

2020-02-10 piayda returns to ruhr gallery for ‘schöner!’ celebrating beethoven

piayda already exhibited at ruhr gallery/galerie an der ruhr in 2017 during the ‘jackson pollock visiting’ exhibition, see picture above. for ‘pollock polyptych (random alignment)’ he used cgi technology to adapt pollock´s painting ductus. the series had been shown at the max ernst museum in brühl for the joseph und anna fassbender award in 2018.

last saturday record of tides performed at beats im bunker festival at medienbunker marxloh in duisburg. the festival was curated by raimond harmes who has also performed as raum für notizen. the line-up also featured artists and acts known from the electric café events like ig-75, all notes off and jingoba electric. record of tides performed a lot later and shorter than announced, also the exclusively produced visuals did not appear as projection. we would like to apologize for miscommunication and are recently discussing and considering contexts of future performances. we would like to thank raimond harmes once again for making this event possible by taking enormous effort in time and investment.
there are no further record of tides live dates scheduled recently, there are rumours about returning to the line-up for the upcoming szeniale in 2021.

we have been waiting for this announcement for quite a while now. record of tides aka sven piayda did some live shows in 2019. fortunately, some of them have been recorded and are available for free download now. in may record of tides played among miss j-by and lemon & pilgrim at galerie der disziplinen in hamm for the electronica kulturnacht. the performance had been recorded by dennis lemon via line and had been slightly edited afterwards and is now available for download.
the electric café open air festival at werdener wiesn was not recorded unfortunately, the bootleg is reconstructed by using parts of the used files combined with ambience. it actually features the tracks performed plus an alternate ending, it does not cover all the live sounds which have actually been played. therefore the bootleg is called ‘reconstructed & extended’.

unfortunately the show at szeniale has not been recorded, it is believed to have been very similar to the performance in hamm.

additionally zany music still offers the performance in eisenheim for electric café in 2018. so zany music offers three quite different live performances featuring microphone, line or reconstructed sound.

check zany music to find the bootlegs for download, further downloads and the full zany music catalogue.

the galerie an der ruhr will open the group show ‘schöner!’ on march 22 celebrating the 250 th birthday of ludwig van beethoven. we have already announced that piayda and the studio are working on a sound-based artwork for the show. recently it is not confirmed if the piece will be contributed or exhibited in the show, the studio is recently in negotiations.

it is our massive pleasure to announce the release of 'collected riffing works', the fifth full length album by record of tides. the album is quite surprisingly released once again by zany music and and is distributed by achive.org as digital version only. the album surprised in style, sound and composition, also there have been no promotion in advance which is quite unusual for zany music.

'collected riffing works' is a collection of ten tracks which have been produced over the period of the past ten years which have been waiting to be released finally. as the title already mentions, the album contains mainly guitar riffing based music focussing on the rock music influences of record of tides. this release is actually no change in style, sven is recently working on electronic and guitar based music.

some heavy guitar sounds have also apperad already in the 2019 live performances, actually none of them had been taken from 'collected riffing works'. however, record of tides may appear live in january 2020 again. more soon.

'collected riffing works' is now available via
zany music and distributed via archive.org.

we have been waiting for this announcement for quite a while now. record of tides aka sven piayda did some live shows in 2019. fortunately, some of them have been recorded and are available for free download now. in may record of tides played among miss j-by and lemon & pilgrim at galerie der disziplinen in hamm for the electronica kulturnacht. the performance had been recorded by dennis lemon via line and had been slightly edited afterwards and is now available for download.
the electric café open air festival at werdener wiesn was not recorded unfortunately, the bootleg is reconstructed by using parts of the used files combined with ambience. it actually features the tracks performed plus an alternate ending, it does not cover all the live sounds which have actually been played. therefore the bootleg is called ‘reconstructed & extended’.

unfortunately the show at szeniale has not been recorded, it is believed to have been very similar to the performance in hamm.

additionally zany music still offers the performance in eisenheim for electric café in 2018. so zany music offers three quite different live performances featuring microphone, line or reconstructed sound.

check zany music to find the bootlegs for download, further downloads and the full zany music catalogue.
