2011-12-29 thankful retrospective and further becoming | entry by sven

looking back i am thinking in years, episodes defined also by my experiences in summer and blogging activities. well, a year seems to be short in retrospective, my year was a long one. it was productive, successful and lead me more and more into what i want to be, personally and professionally.
to be honest, i do not forget the days of whiching to drop it all to go somewhere else, but as a questioner on a journey you might get used to these escape plans. i know, simply going on pays off. still, there is a lot to go on with.

via this website and my texts i can quite good remember and reconstruct what i was about one year ago (even ten years go) and i cannot help but to compare.
so, there are devellopments i wanted to have, to finally achived what i was about to go for. also, some ideas of youth return, quite childish and vivid.

i have to be thankful so far, for meeting and spending my time with the right people (have a look at the previous articles!) at great places, even spending much time on my own doing what i am driven to, defining my space of total retreat.

as the year ends i am looking forward with fascination and joy. at least, i have lost my dislike for autumn, 2011´s sommerbst made me addicted to colours.
so, let´s get on our white bikes and ride through the national parks, maybe you´ll find a museum...?

still becoming, it is not the aim, it is the journey.

here is anothr proof for my autumn joy. michaela best and me started working on once/again in early november, putting soap bubbles into glooming autumn woods. well, what stared as a funny surprise has lead us into a quite ambitioned project. i guess it will take us far...

even AESTATE made a big step: we managed to get organic sound into it. this is really a music group making sense for me, and we can do everything!
we are working on music and performances for 2012, the REMOUNT 3.20 EP will be availabe soon via a danish label, plus we have more material for a fourth album and a big ep. cross your fingers, come with us!

after years i was in mood of
a christmas tree again. we all are not that much into christmas but we decided to make the best of it, to leave out the presents and get to gether for dinner with the families.
during this time our christmas tree, labeled and called molli, became a short time fame star on facebook. of course, we ducumented all of her steps, the buying, decoration and illumination. will be see her next year again?

a final activity picture from yesterday: a view on a gas station from behind in the netherlands. (2011 is so far the year of my most frequent visits of the netherlands and i still cannot get enough, my dutch getting better...)
there is a story behind this image and why i think this is worth showing...
i´ll tell you 2012!

2011-12-20 merry christmas and a tiny new tree | entry by sven

the year is rushing by and guess it was a good one, but this will not by my annual looking back. i am just realizing to have so much material to come up in 2012, more soon.
i did not have a christmas tree last year, and the last one i can remember was in 2007, i guess. i am not too much into christmas, we have an agreement to leave out the gifts, but celebrating a time to calm down and to come together is a good thing.
so we bought a "tree" again, well, i wanted to have a small tree, maybe even to have it for the following months and here it is.
this is me buying a tree at a big plant store on sunday, surrounded by all the other stressed people who did not find the time to buy the decoration on any other day - just like me.

a small tree may keep the christmas mood small, and we are all thankful for some time off and sleeping as much as necessary. my battery is low. we need a break.

merry christmas to all of you!

another place to spend money on a sunday was the yard design market, michi made me go there just to find nothing but me to by a t-shirt - as always. i have good experience with shirts which had been bought on a sunday, no kidding.

once/again update: we have finally digitalized and cut the footage into snippets, after my first selection michi forced me to exchange some scenes. it is very tricky to get structure or narration into the film. what we can say now is: it will be about 5.30 min, because we did not find more suitable material and because it is supposed to "mirror" the digitally generated second or counterpart.
making sound for this will not be easy, i hope to have it somewhere between field recording and drone...
cross you fingers!

papillonner was originally a photographic project by michaela best, the title is now also used by me, because it fits perfectly to the piece i have worked on for months now. it is a video installation about showing a video installation and the perception. the camera in the shown video is flying from one leave to the other while the camera in the screening room is restless hovering through the installation. what do you think how does the visitor behave during watching it?

2011-12-03 under soap bubbles in beautiful autumn woods | entry by sven

wow, this has been quite a ling time on my terms, one month pausing. well, what to report after returning from de hoge veluwe? you know it cannot top it. now, about one month later, with wet and grey weather outside and a little cold, i am looking back to a beautiful, warm and colourful autumn.
being afraid of autumn for decades, i have finally discovered the fascination of it. whenever possible, we tried to be out in the woods enjoying what michi used to call sommerbst, a mixture between summer and autumn.

early november as we were once again out for a walk, she told me to turn around and watch the trees. like in a dreamy sequence, she made soap bubbles showing up, creating an unique moment.
so we went though the woods this afernoon making bubbles, me shooting with a small pocket camera, often missing the right second.

if you have coloured leaves like this, warm sun rays and bubbles people respond imediately positive, feeling touched and entertained, sometimes even taking pictures with their mobile phones. posting some of these bubbles on facebook also triggered great response, it seems like no-one can resist the bubbles.

very quickly the idea of a video came up, so we returned to film the bubbles in the autumn woods dancing in the sunlight. michi often reminds me not to take pictures of everything all the time but to enjoy the moment. as i this idea persuades me, i thought to add it into the movie.

our current working title is once/again, a video piece containing two parts which can be screened afterwards or parallelly next to one another. once is about to show the bubbles coming up from out of nowhere, creating a unique moment (as you can see the bubble can bee seen as a symbol for an unique short and beautiful moment) and then vanishing again.
again is about the idea of reconstructiong this moment even with technology which is made visible through the medium.
as i am quickly obsessed with these ideas again (part #2 so to speak) is already done, so hope to be working on part #1 soon, we will present the result in 2012, hopefully.

here are some stills, not really from the video, but from the production, the upper one taken during the first bubble session, the lower one taken during the filming session an few days later. you may imagine the video coming up, i hope it will have the same great effect.

a still from again, digitally generated with sound, here different image generating methods were merged together. compared to the once video, it looks very barren, and it is supposed to do so, the repruduction is never as good and the real moment. michi was right...

the sell-out at the museum folkwang was a little bit disappointing, maybe only for me. but i found a catalogue from karin kneffel, haus am stadtrand, giving some compository ideas i want to work with, hopefully. above you see my coming home from the museum, mirrored in x-mas decoration.

2011-11-03 parallelism of events in the time drop out | entry by sven

rediscovering the hoge veluwe and the kröller-müller museum was really changing. and it added a new place to be, a place on earth you probably do not want to leave again.
the years and especially the summers seem too short, once again we managed
to go there by autumn. (see also 2010-10-25 how to play by magic numbers | entry by sven)

well, a single day is to short do discover everything, it makes sense to return over and over again. however, in my perception this place is so unique, different and beatuful that i really have the feeling to be taken out of my ordinary life into a kind of "off-space".
as i´m riding on a white bike through the woods to the museum it feels like i have never been away and the year in between was just a short time of doing something else...
i do not want to sound too old or philosophical, but it really triggers the idea (and the feeling) of dropping out of time, all around appears so beuatiful and long-lasting, without having a fixed identity role to play.

the idea of returning is familiar to me. whenever i remember a great day i want to repeat it, i even do the same pictures and poses (triggering visual echos, see above). as you may realize, this is just a naive try to bring back the old day, often a little bit disapointing.
but it leads to a new recognition: at least the paralellism of events gains the illusion of dropping out of time. that´s more than enough for me....

so, one year later i wanted to spent more time in the museum park. i am not that much into sculpture, but this is very beautiful and worth a look. plus: it triggers a lot childhood memories, getting older it is more and more difficult to bring them back.

the museum building is the greatest and most impressing sculpture by original architect peter behrens. two beautiful views, one year apart, less sun this year.

marta pan´s sculpture flottante ‘otterlo’, 1960 - 1961 is a funny and poetic piece. probably one of my first memories of a sculpture. reminding of a swan, the sculpture is floating around all day, for decades...

jean dubuffet ´s jardin d’émail, 1974 is like a mixture of a building or a sheet of floating ice? visiting it for the first time, the tight entrance was dangerous. and slippy: japanese tourists documented their dangerous slides...

solo without the atelier joep van lieshout contributed a mobile home. found for the first time in the park, you can tell it is him by first sight. we decided to live in it forever, but we did not manage to get in.

kenneth snelson´s needle tower, 1968 is also one of my favourites. made of steel and aluminium tubes and wires you wonder how it works. why does it not collabse? have a look from the inside, more mathematical beaty giving no answers.

new canvas for the tent project by cornelius rogge. plus us wondering what it is all about.

once again: the swamp at sunset. would you dare to watch the full sunset and try to leave in the dark?

can you think of something better than cycling through the woods and the stage landscape of the veluwe?
why can´t we be there more often that just once a year?

2011-10-31 ten years after the 'alternative portrait' | entry by sven

this feels strange and old again, i am looking back on something happening ten years ago! well, that must mean that i´m serious in what i am doing or did i simply forget to quit?
in 2001 i was still a student coming up with my exam presentation. as our design department was not that much interested in producing and experiencing on the own work, i had a strong interest to push my own abilities. the exam presentation was changed form a must to a voluntary thing. i stared early to work on my stuff, so i wanted to do it anyway.
in october 31, 2001, i installed different works on the department floor, nine photograms, four pieces from the indices series, two from the statuary series, one from the holy bible series and four from the cadaver series. (except the last one, none of these works are still in my portfolio).
i was looking for a field to produce, and being a bad drawer and having spent my childhood with photography i thought photography could by my medium to discover. i was into andres serrano, cindy sherman but also classics like ansel adams these days, my visual language followed their paths, actually far away from their quality.

to cut a long story short, the presentation was a disaster, a professional execution and felt like a social suicide. i was confronted with stupid questions i could not answer triggering a lot of anger on all sides. especially the cadaver series appeard to be a provocation, it was never meant to be. i felt bad for months questioning if i shloud quit my university career. this was really loosing face.

with some distance, there comes clearity:
the main dislike of my work and presentation was simply triggered in the fact that i had demonstrated an own position, not as an artist but as a student, putting projects into action without the unquestionable leadership of my (main) professors.
plus, i really learned to not use words without knowing their exact definition, that was really helpful for teaching and creating conceptional art.

summing it up, october 31, 2001 was a disaster, but ten years after i am still on the same track, at least more successful. having my lesson learned, maybe it was meant to be.

as i like to wear my scars with pride, i have found the feature documenting the exhibition originally made for the abandoned gallery site/web project PAV2.
now it is availavle as feature via the photography site,
and by clicking here.

two months later i participated in the pencil of nature exhibition of a wannabe gallery with the cadaver works. awfully curated but another oportunity to get experience in making shows and getting in touch with visitors. surprisingly, the feedback was great.
the photo above is a reconstructed low quality analogue scan, anyway, it gives an idea of my work and me at that time.

back to now: an impression at sunset at the hoge veluwe on saturday. i´ll report the experience soon.

roaming around on friday in the autumn woods, suddenly incidental land art: this glooming heart appeard in front of us, short time only, classified as hyper-kitsch. anyway, i love autumn. now.

filming people while eating is a no-go, taking pictures of holliday lunch is a ritual. a bad day for the fish, a good one for me.
i guess i´m spending more days in the netherlands than in germeny recently...in need to get full of fish!

2011-10-19 here, now and 800 lightyears away | entry by sven

since today, the FESTIVAL FREIE KULTUR joining the KUNST PERIPHERIE RUHRSTADT #9 is open at the KAUE today.
we will come back with AESTATE on saturday (we hope to see you there), if everything works good, we will have great usage of beamers and stuff, so we will do a great gig. cross your fingers.
parallel to the
festival, the KPR exhibits a range of visual artists based in or around gelsenkirchen.
"lightyears" is shown in a small dark chamber, actually, you need time to get the full experience, the probe (looking a bit like "voyager I") rushes by and then disappears to a point again, flying lightyears away.
as the festival title is "hinterm tellerrand" (beyond one's own nose) the video work takes you as far as something produced by humans has gone to, about recently
1.78×10^10 km away from the earth and maybe 800 lightyears one day. this is really beyond your own nose!
have a look at the piece, you do not have to pay for it, only the festival needs tickes, the exhibition and installations are free.

you cannot take pictures of it becaue it is fast and dark. have a look yourself, it is rushing by.

the work is behind the curtain, like you know it from museums. step inside and bring some time, 800 lightyears is quite far away, here the journey only takes 8 minutes.

"flag" is my latest video piece, i hope for it to be screened soon. hard to watch, but exploring the principles of a "moving images" what makes it move?

another snapshot from michi´s "sommerbst" shortly before having fish...hmmm.
every autumn says: beauty will not last forever. i like this autumn, because it looks good and is full of events!

go for a sunday afternoon walk. suddenly: pink dragon attack. be careful on building sites, dragons must live somewhere, why not here? i only know where to find the golden dragon...

AESTATE live: october 22, KAUE, gelsenkirchen.
cross your fingers, and do not miss it. this is going to beat the AUDIODIGITALE gig!
this has potential!!!

2011-10-07 echo to echo, twin or rip-off? | entry by sven

as you might know, i have recieved a lot of feedback concerning this journal and its content. actually, i appreciate every feedback, it is good to know that someone must be reading.
it is an even special pleasure when people i know from real life have a look on my thoughts, even when we are not able to exchange our ideas in the every day procedures.

after reporting about the bildsprachen photo fair in the science park last week, and posting the illustraing image above, dietmar (colleague, friend and as obsessed with audiovisual phenomena as i am) came up with an echo of the science park.

one of my burst-out-via-journal ideas is the visual echo, the older you get, the more often images return as echo, you have seen it before, and here it is again.
less than hundred kilometres away from the lying skyscraper of the science park a visual echo of it can be found.
the gesamtschule barmen wuppertal looks very similar, a superficial look would even make no difference between the interieures...
have a look yourself:
www.gesamtschule-barmen.de
www.baukunst-nrw.de

actually, i see an echo as something chronological, this echo here is geographical. what is it then?
a twin? of just a rip-off??? who came first?
can we still have these questions in (post-)post-modernism?

what do you think?

the music is outside, the best hollydays must be in foreign countries. michi wanted to go to nijmegen, so we did. as so often we end up in a carneval, procession or fun fair. it is like a curse.
a romantic view from the quiet into the loud.

i have to show this image because it is my proof that even the end of septmeber can be summer. this year ths summer only showed up in autumn, michi calls it "sommerbst". a phenomenon of the future?

this smiling face as found in the science park has found its way into a tableau. update tba.

AESTATE live: october 22, KAUE, gelsenkirchen.

2011-10-01 oscar ledesma at bildsprachen photo fair | entry by sven

yesterday the bildspracehen gallery in gelsenkirchen opened the bildsprachen photo fair in the science park in gelsenkirchen.
this fair offers professional photographers and young talents to present their work to interested collaborators and publischers as well as to collectors.
oscar ledesma, very active artist based in essen (have a look at this journal and the acticles featuring him) among the photographers presenting, and sometimes explaining their position and working process.

above you see oscar in his "chamber" giving an overview on his photographic work, in my perception very strong with analogue black and white pictures, reminding of manuel alvarez bravo.

find out yourself and have a look at ledesma´s work over at his website www.oscarledesma.net.

open today, 11 am to 7 pm
bild.sprachen
at science park gelsenkirchen
munscheidstraße 14
45886 gelsenkirchen

www.bildsprachen.de

this autumn appears to not only as a "small summer" but also as the time of archetectural echos. in 2003 i was taking a lot pictures of the magarethenhöhe/-siedlung and of uwe kiessler buildings like the science park and the k21 ständehaus for the exams of my education at the university.
i could tell a lot about this "lying skyscraper", but i think you should find out yourself. plus: at night a dan flavin light sculpture illuminates the building.
click the image for larger version, email me for prinatble quality version.

an impression from the inside. actually, there was space for more cahmbers, photographers and positions, and there was also space for more visitors.

if it is in a frame it must be a picture. if it looks like something i could know, it must be what i think it is.
everything is what you think it is.
just simle.

AESTATE live: october 22, KAUE, gelsenkirchen.
if everything works and turns out to be technically possible, this will be the most complex show we ever did. you won´t believe.

2011-09-27 galerie schütte 25th anniversary | entry by sven

this year and especially these days the kettwig-based gallery schütte is celebrating its 25th anniversary with two group shows, one on painting (already over) and one on photography (stll on).

both shows gained my interest and presence, photography even more. since entering the gallery in the beginning of 2010, it became a place for frequent returns. (if follow the journal you might remember the aricles on jana müller´s analogue studio tricks and my own approaches to create (and understand) nina brauhauser works).

gallery head gerd schütte is now leading the gallery into the future decates, looking back on a his own history. his garantee for quality is based upon two main facts:
first of all, schütte is obsessed with art and it´s images, every gallery needs to sell, of course, but above all that he is actually interested in the works and his artists. honestly, this is a quality often missed among his competitors.
secondly, going through the numerous exhibitions, you will find contemporary positions which often have a certain layer of retrospective modernism, like an echo of bauhaus and even post-war painting found in the post-modern dscipline usage. a yesterday in the now for tomorrow.

the show will be open until october 22, 2011.
additionally, a catalogue escorts the show,

above you see a small preview called "shedhead", taken in mülheim adr and postproduction in the netherlands. i will hopefully be featured in my gallery solo show in may 2012, be exhited, more info soon!

AESTATE live again finally. for the firt time, we added some live guitar to the sound, a perfect merge between electronica and post rock. thanks a lot for coming. next date will be october 22, KAUE, gelsenkirchen. as expected: different!

after a rainy summer comes a sunny autum and i am having a bad cold, how stupid is this? the great wheather pulls me out anyway, minigolf in the warm setting sun, beating michi with only one point! yeah!

as i am getting busy again, there was also some time to tavel and visit special places. actually, there are places of frequent returning, an while i am taking pictures of all these events it appears obvious how similar it is.
it is quite simple when it comes to working in a series: when everything changes you will realize the core of things because it is not changeing. like a jazz standard being transformed over and over, in the end remaining pure and ready for more adventures.

a classic return for me is always the opernbauhütte. above you see me in the top level of the building, a very calssic view and similar to a picture taken eralier this year. i always take a lot pictures there and like picture of me in it beacuse i always expect to be there the last time... (the present of future of the building is always unsave, only open by tiny wonders)

the last opening was due the opening party for the sandra anni lang photography exhibition. what a perfect opportunity to spend the warm summer night with a beer on the balcony of the top level!
unfortunately ms lang told later that someone broke into the hütte to destroy the exhibition, steal some beer and leave a taped "fuck you" on the wall.
well, that´s the disillusioning part of it...

r eturn of the icon: some people at the opening knew my series on the operbauhütte and it´changes through it´s "active" months. well, i could not resist to do it again, just for fun, this is the hütte at last saturday, escorted by the moon.

sometimes it is scary how parallel things appear to be. having a look at these images (the light one had been taken in june) makes you wonder if you always do the same thing. but going back to the jazz idea undpeeling the core you can see who is still here: the hütte and me!

more travelling: i wanted to report earlier, but i could not. having scheduled to go back to antwerp and/or the markt van morgen we managed to go there last sunday, finally. above you see me in front of the fotomuseum, well we did not have the time to get in, just a shop-check. well the shop is smaller now, being on a larger space...
plus me taking pictures. i have a lot new stuff produced, i do not find the tinme to update the sites as i want to. recent addition are on facebook, but the new works will be up on the photography site soon. there is a lot to come!

2011-09-10 'imaginary black forest' for next summer | entry by sven

this year´s summer was more a rainy season, but last saturday was a real summer day. fortunately, it was also the birthday party of oscar ledesma, fellowship artist and essen based active scene member. he arranged the b.y.o.b. with dj and painting performance in his small plot of land of his schrebergarten.
the funny thing ist that it reminded everyone of the black forest, a rural region in the southwest of germany, actually quite far away from the party.

after having heard the comparison a few times we had an idea: in 2012 we would do an exhibition in the schrebergarten, turning it into a museum which even mirrors it´s own exhibition: the idea of "imaginary black forest" was born.
a show for june 2012 playing with the idea of the far away region, not with fact but the imagination, like basquiat did with africa.

our aim is quite high, and there is still a year to come, we will see how far we can get, i could imagine to do the curator...

big plans, let´s see, i just wanted to pass on the idea...

'panamera' (2010) was actually shot in the black forest, but it is all about imagination, narration of the possibility. the forest is a stage that triggers stories like a director. this work would be my favourit to be shown in the upcoming show. in case that it will come up....

taveling again, only business: i did the media competence seminar again, like last year and as (only planned) the year before. this is me in the morning. i thought it shoud do some barthroom pictures, like blixa bargeld did on neubauten tours.
and this is me on tour, teaching...

2011-08-30 big picture - size matters to grace | entry by sven

the big picture exhibition at k21 in düsseldorf had been on schedule for weeks now after discovering it on a lazy rainy sunday in june. when we finally managed to see the show, it was extended to november.
the show combines different approaches to the medium, being around in benelux museums over the last years i have to admit that i am searching for a different position concerning video.

nevertheless, the show had some discoveries for me. some names and works reamin in the head, the big picture will not go away. while doing some research concerning the artists that made an impression i had to discover that may of them present their work on their website. well, that appeard great to me, so i could watch them again, watch more work and get an idea about their concept and approach.
on the other hand it confirmed my idea to not show my video work online: watching it as large projection in a dark chamber makes you dive into it, leaving yourself and getting lost in the work. watching it online makes me turn into the audience i do not want: being bored quickly, not having the time and the concentration, fastforward to the next minute, like waiting for the punchline. all grace is lost.
i recommend you to see the show and have your own idea, in spite of the problems of online watching, i would like to show you two artists that made an impression:

richard t. walker combines the grace of making music and the unbelievable beauty of nature. it feel less like an artwork you have to worship, it feels more like a shared experience.
actually, this is why i have contributed the picture of me sitting in the tree above, a tree which i had visited the last three summers making it become my tree of cognition....
anyway, richrd t. walker´s big picture conribution is the hierarchy of relevance. take your time.

another discovery is mark lewis, who i could get in touch with at the bozar: prater hauptallee, dawn and dusk was screen to the opposite in off-time of claerbout´s sections of a happy moment. i did not like it first of all, this work isolated from the body of work i could not understand. big picture shows forte! as an extremely large projection. that made an impression and i slowly discoverd more and had to find a certain parallelity to my own work: the calm and minimal production and editing makes it appaer banal on the first superficial look but exploring the medium and it´s possibilities in a deep and serious way!
as always, try to see as much as you can!

k21 / k20 / kunstsammlung nrw

returning from düsseldorf means to face the enigma, a tunnel leading home has a graffiti tag saying "mauz fume". a term so magnificent and senseless that it returns again and again. here i was able to shoot a picture of it finally. if you have an idea what it could mean, please tell me!

more big pictures: the festival illuminated and played with the freilichtbühne in mülheim adr to generate an atmosphere known from the white nights, but without acting... returning next year on demand.
this time even with many artists known from the EGGXPO: frei-lichtbuehne.de

"full of fish?" - "not entirely!" the great thing concerning rituals is that they are rituals: rest de polderkamer before and after having fish for dinner.
some things never change.

2011-08-23 only the memory makes the experience | entry by sven

having days off and escaping to the netherlands has become a ritual. relaxing, finding great museums nerby and taking photos of nearly every tree around is the classic approach to these days.
looking back, all days are merged to a single experience, a dream-like memory racing by...
getting home, turning on the tv and hitting an andreas gursky documentary with him realizing, that the photo is nothing elss but a reconstructured memory. so true. you can only understand the story when the movie is over. this idea doesn´t feel good, let´s get back to the naiv fascination of now.
anyway, looking back is great and it was truly funny.
next to new photowork which will be coming up i can offer you some sketches...

the discovery of a new museum is mostly connected to the fact that david claerbout is having a video piece installed. the BOZAR in brussels, belgium had a show on jeff wall, entitled "the crooked path" after one of his works. a great show with a lot quantitly mixing up wall´s great lightboxes with influencial artists of all disciplines. a great show. the museum on the other hand is not really a must see, the air condtition really cools down too much, the staff is not very helpful and photos are not allowed. sometimes you can also find yourself in front of great pieces which are not even labelled!
a new discovery: a video piece on an upright half-pipe projected by two hd beamers. a piece on burning oil and echos of war. ten minutes of facinated watching and ten minutes of searching for info...
actually, the piece is called "we´ll be oil" by mihai grecu, a name you should not forget. not even at BOZAR.

another highlight from the south of the netherlands: within a camping site we found this giant rubber pad in front a a spar supermaket. so the pad was referred by us only as the "sparhuepfburg" because it appeard to be in constant use. after three years of returning, at every whether situation, every time, 24/7 the kids were boncing like there is no tomorrow.
we know there is by bouncing.

what you want: a million dollar and an ice cream car. here is another facination piece from the hollidays. at a certain beach there is not the baywatch on patrol, it is the off-road icecream car.
have a look at these tires! have a look ate the flags triggering all the kids and an unstoppable desige for frozen sugar water. (it also works for me...)
this is utopia: driving around at the beach selling ice cream. this image is made to reamain!

fresh: this is like a quiz: where was this picture taken?

another beatiful memory, taking pictures in the dusk is great and magic. i hope to come up with some great pieces from this setting in the future.

once agin: we have been to rotterdam again, visiting the submarine wharf to see the one and the many by elmgreen & dragset. wow, funny, scary, realistic and surreal at the same time. the set is a fake, the feeling is real. if you have the chance to see, it do it. (and go there my aquabus, that is a ride!)

2011-08-19 head in the bells | entry by sven

there was a lot going on over the last days, being in benelux again, i could not report, i was too busy and too lazy. anyway, i´m filled up with experiences i have to order in my memory. going through the photographs and writing in the journal may help a little bit.
but here i have to comment some pictures wich reached me some days ago, taken at the 3rd broicher schlossnacht. surprisingly i met may artists from the EGGXPO again, the kelbassa´s panoptikum among them, showing an installtion featuring two of "glocken".
to me they appear like the smallest museum thinkable, put your head into the bell and you are in another world. more bells are scheduled to be produced and exhibited, let´s see...

a picture taken by corinna kuhn of the panoptikum, showing me diving into the bell and it´s world. well, this seems to be a good picture to illustrate the summer: armed with a glass of beer and an umbrella, happy to have found a dry place to hide...
find out more about the "glocken" over here.

boom! more impressions of the event. some of the visitorw were disappointed not to real explosions, well these sculpures were beautiful and are fascinating even on a photograph.

here is a tiny memory of yesterday: we have been to rotterdam again, visiting the submarine wharf to see the one and the many by elmgreen & dragset. wow, funny, scary, realistic and surreal at the same time. the set is a fake, the feeling is real. if you have the chance to see, it do it. 2011-08-05 kira kira at the MUDAM / five years of becoming | entry by sven

after visiting luxembourg in march there was the strong need to return as soon as possible, be in this 'international' place again, to vistit friends in residence and to go back to the MUDAM, of course. as we had finally fixed our returning date, the 'rauschpuppe collective' came up with a tight plan for cultural acivities (only managing one half of it) and ending up in the MUDAM and the MUDAM park to see kira kira.
the icelandic musician kira kira played with trumpeteer eirikur orri olafsson on comission of artist thomas pausz who was doing his park based praxis.
this gig was about experimental music, hovering, drowsy and ambientesque.
as you know, unique music fits my needs when it comes to audio stuff, but what really made a big impression was the whole setup of kira kira´s sound, the museum (park) the openminded audience and the evening sun coming out to turn the performence into dreamy experience. i remember myself standing there drying to dive into the sound, being thankful for this fantastic situation i was in knowing that i cannot really switch of my endless thoughts spinning in my head.
now, looking back it appears more like a memory of a dream than of an experience.

the museum served some wine, beer and prosecco standing around. everyone was taking something. so asked a girl: "what to i have to do to get a glass of wine?" - "get a glass and help yourself!" she replied, and so did i. actually i had beer. drowsy!

the arty performance somehow was a warm up for our own performance: the RENERT TRIO was formed, rehearsing on friday night, recorded on saturday night, released on wednesday night. sounds like a funny story, but it is true. unexpected...

the hardest thing is to leave the place which you have found out you belong to. above you see me leaving the mudam, the park and the setting. thank god we returned on sunday to the mudam, i also got the "schreibheft" for free for commenting on facebook. this museum is a good friend.

if you have follows the journal over the last years, and over the last months especially you will have realized my facination for what i call visual echos. above you see me during our first approach at the MUDAM and below five months later, during our last weekend´s visit.
nothing has changed, everything has changed.

five years go by quickly, when they are over you look back. the MUDAM is only five years old, so is digital kustrasen (releasing the RENERT TRIO debut these days).
i like easter and always wanted to have a golden easter chocolate bunny when i was younger, and i did not eat the last one from 2006, it was save in a glass container. now i have realized that the chocolate decomposes and it falls apart, it had changed the colour and turned into dust. well, at least there was the oportunity fo a photographic project, to be annpouced. well, five years are over.

2011-07-28 identity labyrinth, easy to get in but how to get out? | entry by sven

recently i am stumbling from one event to the other, some fun stuff and some professional stuff also. actually, i do nit know what i am doing anyway, or even why. the necessity to question my actions is even more growing, i am not the only one, thank god, but actually it won´t help you to feel better. above you see me in the labyrinth, a dutch restaurant in venlo. when i (or the loved ones) really need some hours off, we just go there to check the fried fish and the record stores.
while sitting outside in one of the rare sunny hours discovered the reason for our escape. the everyday life and all the things appearing to be necessary for others and unsatisfying for yourself create the which "to drop out" of your days. well, i am sure that everyone knows the feeling, probably most people would think of drug abuse. actually, this is also one possibility, but not the best one. indeed, you want to escape from yourself, or better: from what the others think you are. well, maybe identity is not the image you have of yourself, but the other peoples´ view on you. the best way to leave this identity (not your life or week) is to go where no-one knows who you are, you are around without your identity. isn´t it strange? a lot of people (including myself) are in struggling search for their identity and i am discovering ways to get rid of it? maybe this is why people crave for hollidays...
me in the cloakrooms of the labyrinth restaurant getting lost on the way to the toilet ending up in the kitchen was a funny embodying of my own identity labyrinth…

yeah, carpark north, probably the only pop-rock band i am in came to bochum to play a 45 minutes set at the bochum total festival. the danish band is not the headliner in germany so they palyed early and we could leave early when it became tidy in the crowd.

"slinky springs to fame" by tobias rehberger is a bridge in oberhausen next to the museum ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen where i was showing "roses (after richter)" in april. it is quite new and more a sculpture than a bridge. on my mother´s demand we crossed the river on "slinky springs" but were stopped by the most massive rain (and thunder) you can think of. we returned before getting to the other bank and found shelter in the museum.

what a thunderstorm. seems like all episodes end up rainy this summer…

even two days before…let´s get outside…argh, let´s drive home!

2011-07-18 mirrored allegory: everything´s fine & nothing´s save | entry by sven

the white nights leave me disappointed und unsatisfied this time. we have been expecting this event for so long actually it appeas just as an innuendo of what could have been. do not get me wrong: the theater an der ruhr did a great job like everytime, it seems that they even came up with a wider range of program concerning music and plays.
seeing the plays outside generates a certain magic you cannot imagine without having seen it, on the other hand bad wheather can destroy all the great plans and ideas. above you see roberto ciulli delaying the play while hoping for "less" rain (no-one dared to hope for no rain).

the play started anyway, gott by woody allen appears as a self-refelxive classically greek comedy, but after being wet and in the cold, after seeing nothing but umbrellas and losing the sound due technical difficulties caused by water, we decided to leave.

a last look back: it could have been great, the saturday´s program was a blast, but i found myself home at 9.30 pm, wet, cold and tired. bad mood, see?
roberto ciulli reported that the play was stopped after having to big difficulties with the wheather.
matthias mainz of chromekraut mailed me that the band performed a little earlier only in front of a small audience, once again. it seems really ironic, they were confronted once agin with bad wheather making it impossible for visitors to stay.
i guess i have lost interest in bringing AESTATE to the withe nights, the wheather would hate us anyway.

last night´s kasper by peter handke was the only play we could see, and in the end it seemed to be a good end.
anyway, there is a bitter aftertaste mirroring my own struggles in life. even if you try hard and leave out the mistakes, everything may break down and you´ll get not even the half of what was meant to be.
i am sorry for the theater, i would have wished for more, for all of us.

a snapshot from thursday, i have been there under a claer evening sky, a little tired but full of hope, let´s keep this image in mind while looking back.

the white nights as we know them, another image to remember. and probably to expect next year.

2011-07-13 'white nights' festival opens with some old friends | entry by sven

looking back, the white nights have been always climaxes within my summer memories. the illuminated park, the outside plays and musical performances had been great. this is a must see for me, actually not only because it is for free!
after the leaving out white nights in 2010 (and their strange "half white eve") the festival returns with a great program and there are some old friends among them:

Wer hat meine Schuhe vergraben? based upon collected memories of muelheims residents. a poetic but wordless and dreamy approach to the city´s history, placed into a seaside scenario.
i guess i have seen this piece twice, you should take your chance, it is more a dream than a play.

in 2009 the avantgarde group chomekraut were playing live (due the bad wheather only in front of a very small audience). this year they will return once again, this is less a concert, it is even more a trip.
even more funny: the press release from the theater an der ruhr features a quote from my journal back from 2009. so let´s quote the quote:

Der Essener Künstler Sven Piayda schrieb dazu in seinem Blog: "(...) around 10 pm at dusk the avant garde supergroup chromekraut entered the stage, (...) the performance was noisy and harmonic, teasing and torturing..."
.
actually, i stll hope for AESTATE to perfom next year at WN. marsen jules, mastermind bening the 2008 audiodigitale does today. the theatre seemes to be openminded, are you?

i hope to meet you at the white nights,

2011-07-10 let´s buy some houses we cannot live in | entry by sven

yesterday, we have been spending some time around the new thyssenkrupp headquater buildings on our way from ikea to somewhere else. i wanted to go back to the stammhaus which i had discovered some months ago in a night driving by, wondering why this old house is illuminated like a sculpture. the tv gave the answer, it is just a replica of the old houses used as company entry points and living places at the same time, being an important symbol for the starting days of the company.
as we were fooling around with our cameras, michaela did the picture of us above. it looks llike a holliday shot in front of the hotel, well this is just a coincidental composition. the building behind us is actually the local tax office. well, in a way, i have paid for the buliding, some of the bricks which it was made of must be mine, so somehow it is good to habe a picture of us in front of our property...

the stammhaus and me posing as its resident. it is really funny, the company history and the the region are bound to each other, this sculpture is just another proof for financial power and self-reference, it is somehow scaring me.
the outside looks great, looking into the rooms made us think of gregor schneider having moved in. just kidding.

i am really good at the resident pose. looks like me having too much free time? well, sometimes, not for long. this is what it ends up with...
... and this is where the circle closes: gregor schneider also has some expensive archetecture to offer you cannot live in...well, you would not want to.
by the way, i was in mönchengaldbach last monday, the garage is still there, check the abteiberg!

michaela did an update: after doing the EGGXPO show in spring with kelbassa´s panoptikum i wanted to do a feature about them. i did not find the right time and idea to do that.
last saturday we met them on an exhibition market in bredevoord in the netherlands, we bought some work and now michaela is doing the feature.
have a look at her site and their site!

2011-06-26 re-culturing redux and live stream images | entry by sven

last week had an event, which had generated images as beautiful and strange at the same time (see above), so i wanted to come up with them. the eichbaum aera had its problems, its cultural climaxes and is (not only for me) a place of ongoing hope and diappointment. raumlaborberlin had some ideas for the opera and the afterlife, but it turned out that only people nearby could take care of the location, and actually it seems impossible to reallly get a structure into it.
i had to accept that out directions and wishes are different and often they get lost before putting something in action.
i have accepted the fact, even for myself, and i am not going to put any of my recources into the project, but i will support all things happening there.
last saturday one of the amateur actors from the eichbaum opera organized a "mut zum hut" party, a very strange thing, actually fitting perfectly to the place. going throght it we asked ourself for the meaning of this party... well, thank god something is happening anyway...

my classic view on the huette, it is still there and begs for task. let us not expect too much, but i guess there might be funny things in future...
now the raumlaborberlin returns with a new plan:
"eichbaum park". the project will be presented next friday and saturday, i won`t be able to be there, but you might have a look. and: let´s enjoy what is coming up...

extremely bad wheather makes you think about what to do, even if you really want to do nothing... michaela found the aquazoo in düsseldorf, and the penguin webcam. the upper picture shows a snapshot from last night, the lower image is a current (live) view into the penguin area. we call this penguin big brother and had a strong need in seeing them live.

(from best-made.de)
(penguin webcam images take from here)

well, we did not see the penguins live, the bad whether made all the families go there, see above. what to do on a rainy day in düsseldorf, late afternoon?
we shortly stepped into the K21 museum, just to check the shop, but the current show in video is a must see: BIG PICTURE will be running until august 14.
somehow, everything comes together that fits my needs in art: artificial diorama spaces and real time video. i could not have done this any better!

2011-06-21 just some previews of the upcoming | entry by sven

there are different things going on, i actually wanted to tell something about other events, i´ll probably do that later. even for me it is tough to get some structure into everything. well we will have this more structured soon.
yesterday, we started to prepare the "zeitgenössische stadtbilder" at d-52 in düsseldorf. the opening will be on july 1, i hope everything works great.
additionally, the galerie auf zeit in gelsenkirchen opens their first group show Glaube-Liebe-Hoffnung tomorrow, featuring my video work AUTOERASE.
i cannot join the opening.
maybe we can bring up the news next week...

2011-06-11 in the making means being on the way | entry by sven

in an interview (which is supposed to come up these days) i was asked if i am working in an atelier. well, i don´t, i think photographers must be outside. much of the work i do is digital so there is no working with material in a classical sense, so i have to work with professional producers in turning the digital piece into a physical work. that means to travel a lot.
this week i was driving around a lot, so i had enough time to realize, that being on the way to a factory is an important part of my production process. actually, this is very stressful, especially if you drive around for nothing. this week had a lot of these usesless time and energy absorbing trips: cancelled meetings and misplanned appointments leave me quite frustrated.
anyway, i am in the time schedule.

contemprary navigation systems are funny inventions: they help you to go to places you have never been before, but even more interesting: the way the pick up for you if you leave out the highway can be an adventure. we should do that again, you would not believe, where you´ll go through if you trust the machine...

the new cards are here. 60 pieces, showing excerpts even from 2011 works. get yours!

plus: as passed on via facebook: if you speed down aphex twin you´ll have something like boards of canada. amazing isn´t it? do think it would work the other way around???

2011-05-31 drowsy summer dates | entry by sven

today is one of these days in summer which are actually not hot, more cold and rainy. the trees are glooming green in front of grey skies. you may think this is strange, but what is more bringing you down than to hang around on these quiet days listening to autechre´s oversteps and checking to upcoming dates. somehow in my imagination the grey whether, summer and fairs and festivals in muelheim adr are connected.

this region has a lot to offer: above you see me having a glass of red wine on the heißen market. i think it is extremely funny to stand there alone with a glass of red wine next to the crossing. actually, there was a big wine festival on the other side, that you can not see. we have been there a few times, last year we escaped because of the horrible music, this year we chatted with friends long enough until the music ended.

i am well prepared and informed about upcoming events, so i would like to give some dates and tell you what it is afterwards because sometimes i do not know if i am allowed to pass on all facts at this moment. so we can set our schedules and be surprised when it comes up. tell me, if and when you want to participate!

2011-05-23 'out-of-sync' ended and the returning plans | entry by sven

this may sound strange to you, but it is true. there are certain pieces in creation which can really give a new direction. many people have recoreds which have changed your life, or even visual artists, movies or further aesthetic objects that lead to a new direction.
a striking show in a fantastic architecture ended yesterday. luxembourg´s MUDAM show "out-of-sync" was a great discovery and even one of the best shows i have seen in a while. hitting my interest with a lot of video work and further positions in the orbit of what is also my approach to reality and production have become to a landmark in the year and for me as a person.

our step to luxembourg was a great experience anyway (i reported) and the "out-of-sync" show was the cherry on the cream topping on the cake.
without even having left luxembourg our decision to return was born and fixed! not only to see how the MUDAM is going to manage a follow up after such a climax, also to meet the rauschpuppe, steph and maik, again...

now that the "out-of-sync" show is over my days feel not very syncronized, they are darmatic and changing on the one side, boring and static on the other, my hope lays in lazy summer days...when i have learned lazyness, finally.
..

a very nice night, unexpected... facebook has many functions, it is the vulgar display of bordom on the one hand, the link to ones in need to find each other on the other: mexico and essen based artist oscar ledesma contacted and invited me to the final of the NUTUR FESTIVAL in bochum last saturday. i did not expect much, but recieved a lot. above you see his installation piece as collaboration with bianca wickinghoff.
more collaborations in the making...?

AUTOERASE is a video installation piece made of six single works of mine dealing with the surface and nessecity of moving images. it is supposed to be shown in an installation on june 4 in gelsenkirchen in a KUNST PERIPHERIE RUHRSTADT show. more info will follow, hopefully.

a tiny newsflash from AESTATE: we are setting up and are planning new live performances and releases in summer and autumn. let´s be patient.

2011-05-08 the visual echo and the promise of the surface | entry by sven

there was so much going on this spring, i could not comment everything but i just wanted to bring up the ritual again. every year in february i find myself on a birthday party and the pictures i take there look very much the same. what i like most about the party is the strange set up, it allways feels like a setting of a david lynch movie or some scandinavian production with a dark north location. actually, david lynch is the name to call here, was the one using visual echos of certain scenes things, for example strange red lamps...

here the visual echo has another meaning for me: like an audio signal is given at one time and being reproduced by the echo, even visual things and ideas work like this. taking an image of the red lamp, returning after one year, expecting the red lamp again and taking another image is an act of sustaing the echo. you know what is coming up and you know that everything is okay if you will find what you expect.

if you change you outer appearance you will be confronted with your own visual echo, people will allways ask for a meaning. this is strange, they did not ask for the meaning of the former appearance, they do not question themseves...
only if the visual echo is not sustained, the surface is in question to have a meaning.
think about it!

well, if the ideas given above are to strage for you, i have something easier for you based upon photographs i have found on michaela´s blog.
have a look at the pictures above, do you see the visual echo? do you see the difference? i know, this one is tricky, but you´ll have the whole summer!
tell me, if you´ll find out!

2011-04-28 the aftermath and the upcoming | entry by sven

time flies these days. a bad cold had struck me but it is getting better. the great EGGXPO show is over again. while planning it i thought i could spend more time while relaxing in the "museum park", actually it turned out not to be working, there was so much to do, to explain and to sell.
before i will tell some more about my events i would like to tell you a little bit about the koudekerkseweg in the netherlands. above you see a snippet as captured and merged from google street view. "what is so special about it?" you may ask youirself and actually this is always the right question when it comes to finding a motive. well, nothing but:
i spend a couple of days in the koudekerkseweg in biggekerke in the netherlands in summer 2010. i took a lot of pictures of it, every day at different times of the day, so this street with no further relevance became the stage for my ideas concerning the image and it´s being. the already well known image is the one below, insomnia combines night and day scenarios exploring time span of and into a photograph.

the longer i work with images the less importance becomes the motive, it is just one further actor following a script. insomnia is just the first work based upon material taken in this street, two further pictures will come up in 2011, dealing with the surface and meaning of a work.
well, after doing an update, it my look like this:
(remember it is just a preview)

"dutch eve" 2011, "insomnia" 2010 and "terabyte" 2011
form the koudekerkseweg triptych
what do you think?
i´ll keep it in my mind, let´s see where we can place it!
have a look at the updates over at
svenpiayda.com/photography

deejaying for the anyway was great fun. being nervous at first i lost all the fears on the way and brought some heavy electronica tunes into my favourite place to be. funny about the audience: noone there who had been expected but may guys coming up and asking for further dates...the audience seems never really interested, there is to much going on in this city.
surprisingly i could recruit audience from my dj det to come to the EGGXPO - with overwhelming success!
anyway, that was fun, i guell i´ll do more dj sets in the future, it is more simple than doing live sets and i can get druck during.

however, the set and the exhibition were great and to be honest, if you haven´t been there you have missed a lot!

thanks again to kuno lange and the "mülheim bubble"!
let´s see what we can do in the future...

new video works added: "bass" and "landschap" (see still above) as shown at the EGGXPO.

2011-04-08 what not to do: another lesson learned | entry by sven

i am in the great position to do what i love, working on art and music and teaching the principles of art, crafts and design means much to me. it is great to do exhibitions on a professional level, but i am always open to do independent stuff when i am convinced. when i believe in an idea i can forget profit and just do something for its own sake, learning something or discovering new views means great profit to me anyway…

recently i have to lean the lessen i thought i had learned before: working with amateurs triggers the romantic idea of working with people who love their work as much as i do. once again i had to learn that amateurs can turn out as being non-professionals in the worst case. well , after planning an AESTATE live date with students for three month and exclusive visual pre-production, the participation is now (after different proofs of mismanagement) cancelled, three weeks before the gig and after the promotion we have already spread. this wasting of time and promotion efforts for nothing drives me nuts.

some days ago i was asked to participate in another art exhibition project in a former church next to where i live. after checking out the non-professional youngsters i am aware of the easy come easy go mentality which does not fit my needs. maybe i´ll join the luxury of being just a visitor at the opening with a bottle of beer in my hand… well the lesson has two layers of awareness: i became more careful in collaborating and i am in the lucky position which allows me to turn down offers, finally.

still, if you want to, we can work on something great together, but please do not waste my time. it could mean the end of our communication.

2011-03-23 pondering WTF (no methology) | entry by sven

on thursday, march 18 the kunstverein leverkusen opened the tim berresheim exhibition "pondering WTF (no methology)" showing recent and older works. After discovering his unique approach to imagery via internet, having a look at a single work at art cologne and meeting him at his release party for "studies in future blues", this was my opportunity to have a wider look in the show.

once again, the phenomenon of berresheim´s work is not easy to capture, slipping away even short before grabbing the illusion of knowing something about it. being seen as a visual artist in the first place, his music follows similar strategies, the new record appears as a strange mixture of techno, idm, house and whatever… once again, it is not about mixing styles, just telling them for orientation.
mixing up photography and cgi (my familiar and most exciting tools) his works appear more like paintings, sometimes drifting into the abstract to generate superior textures on a printed surface on wood. often related to the term computer art (so picasso did brush art…?), this term does not make sense in my perception, the need for classification and clarity seems to be big among the spectators, berresheim´s title of the exhibitition seems to be like an advice to not waste time while searching for wrong answers.
actually, i dislike art which is not holding a key to it´s code and it´s conceptual message. this case is different, the consequence in denial, the brilliance in using technology, the visual magic and the direct triggering of the audience turn his work into an even physical experience.

teresa herzmann did the photographic documentation of the opening evening. next to some views into the kunstverein, the double portrait above was shot by her. once again another close encounter evidence photo with cultural icons, often unknown to mainstream. maybe i´ll start a gallery with these pictures, this is my number three after bernadette lahengst and gusgus´ president bongo.

the catastrophes and ongoing disasters in japan have been shocking everyone around the world. i am sorry and scared at the same time. how to handle these pictures? as spring is coming up I feel alive, but a sublime feeling of mourn is escorting me since last friday. politicians and scientist confirm that we are safe in germany, actually I do not feel safe, due the situation in japan and also due the nuclear power plants all around.
however, these horrible scenes on tv remind me of my luck of not being threatened by earthquake, tsunamis or nuclear fission. this is no schadenfreude, definitely not, it just reminds me how lucky I am, and probably most of you. maybe we do not have real problems…?

we feel unable and shocked, we want to help anyway. i would ask you to donate to an organization you trust. to engage you a little more, i have designed a little piece. it is based upon the japanese flag, the hinomaru. It is the image that came to my mind and did not go away anymore. it shows the rising sun, a symbol for hope and strength, which is now falling to pieces and needs to be fixed. also the sun offers us energy for free, the flag can also be read as an advice in power production of the future, now the idea of nuclear power production has come out of fashion, friendly speaking.

donate to whoever you think you can trust, we trust the RED CROSS and supported them. (this is no advice, just one possibility) over here:
drk.de/news/meldung/5565-japan-rotes-kreuz-im-
dauereinsatz-fa14r-die-opfer.html

if you have donated, i want to give you my picture as a present over here as printable version. put it on your website, print it out and pass it on, tell everyone what it means, let´s hope, pray and be thankful for every disaster not happening.

i´ll trust you.
this is our hinomaru donor appeal.

2011-03-08 meeting the label boss / art in luxembourg | entry by sven

due some lucky circumstances i had the chance to go to luxembourg. i wanted to go there for a while, i was always fascinated by a country which is so small, in my perception this means an ideal place for a very own identity surrounded and influenced by many other countries. staying a few days in luxembourg was a great opportunity to discover the country, to work on new visual material, to visit the MUDAM and other exhibitions and to meet digital kunstrasen co-boss meik puppe.

back in 2009 i contacted digital kunstrasen for the first time to see if we could do a release together. quickly the label leaders thomas kempka and meik puppe decided to make it happen. dominion empire by AESTATE came out in january 2010 and was escorted by a big interview in the DKmagazine. i even met thomas kempka some months later.

when it turned out that we would finally go to luxembourg, i contacted meik and we quickly argeed to meet. being a migrant to luxembourg, meik can share our view on things and had some advices where to go, so we could learn a lot about the country and getting some inside views instead of just taking pictures of surfaces.

meik and me share the same obsession in doing projects in a very straight and productive way, even if they are non-profit oriented. well, somehow we are all artists doing things in similar ways ending up in very different results. summing it up, all the artists cannot be devided by disciplin, just by their straightness in putting things into action. we all can consider a lot, but how many of us finish it and release it to the public where it is autonomous to the audience?

apart from common projects we want to come back to luxembourg in summer, there will be more to tell soon.
if everything turns out to be working as scheduled, i want to do another EP with AESTATE on digital kunstrasen in 2012.
mr puppe is interessted...

find out youself:

finding the way to the MUDAM was a long one, even if you have a bad map and decide to go there as pedestrians. above you see the first view of it while realizing that we are on the right track. below, me in the basement of the museum. OUT-OF-SYNC 17/02/2011 - 22/05/2011 is one of the best art shows i have seen for a while. in combination with one of the most beautiful museum buildings i have ever been to it was great.
i finally watched david claerbout´s "untitled (man under arches)" and discovered new artists. you should go there, that´s my cultural davice. if you cannot, you should visit my upcoming exhibition featuring dormancy and insomnia which would have perfectly fitted into the mudam exhibition. more soon...

laurent montaron is my new discovery. crossing the disciplines but mainly in photography, video and sound he made a big impression. to be honest, he is the first one who made a sound sculpture which did not annoy me, well it was a pleasure. the youtube video above gives a good impression on his work as presented in another location. have a look.

roses (after richter) at ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen, is still running very successfully. the entry is free and the show is worth to be visited.

2011-02-18 ludwig galerie "frisch zubereitet" press conference | entry by sven

a long awaited event and show is now about to start. frisch zubereitet, the exhibition curated by the arbeitskreis oberhausener künstler on recent works of local artists at the ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen, will be opened on sunday, 4 pm.

today the press conference was held in the exhibition. dr. christine vogt gave detailed info on the exhibition in general. later she led press and present artists throgh the whole exhibition, giving some info in short form to every piece of work, sometimes supported by the artists.

above you see dr. vogt next to my roses (after richter) piece. i admit, i wanted to have it on another screen, but in the context of the exhibition everything makes sense. i´ve seen, what even benjamin nachtwey told me: gallerists (and museum curators) know best how to install an art show, even if the artists do not see this in the first place.

it is great show, entertaining, teasing and provoking. i am proud to be a part of in and i´m thankful for all the positive feedback.
i hope to see you on sunday, 4 pm:

speeches by dr. christiane vogt and apostolos tsalastras are expected, free entry to the exhibition

roses (after richter) at ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen, have a look at the concept. i know, the key to the code of the work can be found within the work. if you do not have the time to discover: here is the cheat!

bucky piece done (actually it is about carbon): ms best does not only correct my text work, she even found logic goofs in my art! thank god, i could corret it and the result is a cgi/photography piece which is as conceptually perfect as roses (after richter).

the hammes collection shows my works of the collection, last week starting. the works will stay within the collection afterwards but it will no more be available for visits for tzhe next time. the tiny show got extremely positive feedback! last week now, hurry up
.

2011-02-09 a professor´s prophecy and AVL homes for pigs | entry by sven

i can stll hear the words of one of my professors echoing in my head (i won´t tell any names here): "if you turn a boat upside down, you´ll have a perfect roof. no-one needs architects." actually, he also stated this with architects around...

yesterday this idea came back like a striking lightning. after pre-installing the roses (after richter) piece, we thoght it could be a great idea to use the first warm rays of sunlight for having a walk through the free zoo behind the castle and it´s park. above you see a housing for pigs. being too much into art we were reminded of atelier van lieshout ´s work, the housing really looks like a piece by the group. having a closer look, it turned out to be just a kind of big plastic basin.
well, we can say: "turn around a plastic basin and you´ll have the best AVL-look-alike piggy home."

scary, isn´t it?

roses (after richter) at ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen will be shown next week, my work is part of a big show, i wanted to install it myself, now i have to trust the museum. to be honest, i´d prefer to do it myself. we will have to trust there is a good result. anyway, above you se the back of the gallery, a sunny view from the park.

work in progress: i have started a piece photographic piece about a network, once again crossing over photography and cgi. i want to make sure, there is a way to work on this topic without doing something related to "facebook". i want to go to the ancient core...

this mini-vader is spreading round among collgues and students, and i just pass it on to you. no matter how may times i watch it, i have to laugh out loud in the end...
what about you?

2011-01-29 reset the preset, once again, less is more | entry by sven

it is like a traditon to believe that the beginning of a year is actually a nature-given episode in time, it seems that the oganisation process for the whole year is always done in it´s first months. well, to go on with my tradition, i am setting of my plans once again, coming up with new works and projects, looking for new collaborators.

sometime you create something and you do not know it´s quality, then there are others who focus on a certain work. this is what happened yesterday while planning a common video project or a common performance (to early to tell more or tell names). the work you see is called podium, playing with the expectation of a person coming up for a speech, then realizing that the talking person is alreyda there, invisible but refelcting in the podium. the simplicity of it´s graphic appearance and the expectation of narration in the medium seems to create a certan tension, and a certain strength.

erasing things makes you focus on the left over, or let´s say, carriers in meaning. like one of my professors said, if it has no meaning, it is not art, it is trash. (acually she had a very cool austrian accent, so she said "drähsch")

video is a powerful discipline in post-postmodernism (or even thereafter), let´s keep it pushing forward.

another variety of video: we will be back live, AESTATE audivisual performances 2011. watch out!

roses (after richter) at ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen, soon. documentaries to be updated!
(the work is still available)

the gates, a complex piece from 2010, playing on expectation, combination and innuendos, an infinite screening without delivery, can you enter through the gates? so far nor screening, above a moitor version try at ArtCamp. a scary piece, let´s see when you´ll watch it.

2011-01-24 three days, full culture, all inclusive | entry by sven

wow, that has been a weekend! i told you to go to the museum folkwang screening v with corinna schnitt and i was right. the screening was great, actually it were not the most exciting video pieces i had ever seen, but it was good work, full of funny and cryptic ideas. the great screening ended in a discussion on what video is (and even if it makes sense to study this) and it ended up with me discussing the screenings for the whole evening. my advice to go there was right, you have missed a lot!

saturday was grey and we needed some time outside of the appartments: the ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen opend a roy lichtenstein poster retrospective (full catering included) and we simply went there. lichtenstein is a must-know for people being interested in art, actually not really one of my favourites. kpr collaborator and gallery staff member nadine heckner offerd a private guided tour through the works, which was perfect. additionally, i had the chance to inspect the rooms of a new exhibition coming up featuring one of my works (there is no need to keep it as secret anymore):
"frisch zubereitet" at ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen will feature recently made works from local artists, i will contribute roses (after richter).
once again, thanks for the guided tour, thanks for the technical support!

sunday was full of work somehow, to get our we stepped to zollverein to have a look on the 2010 merch left-over flea market, which we did not discover, but:
we found free tickets for the ruhr museum - so we went into the ruhr museum!
sometimes everything works out.

three days in three museums? that must be enough for some days. but what to do on grey days?
i´m looking forward to the upcoming exhibitions.

update 2011-01-27: a tiny snippet for everyone who was not able to visit the show, or even getting a private guided tour! dr. christine vogt guides you through the exhibition.

roses (after richter) (to be updated soon) will get an old tv monitor. i wanted to get a beamer, the museum offered different possibilities to show the work, but with all the possibilities it looks best on a tv screen.
if you have missed roses (after richter) at museum burg horn last year, you should not miss this one!

me in front of (or behind of) the ludwig galerie schloss oberhausen. this after the buffet opening, the museum is empty again as you can see. more images from this place in february and april.

2011-01-17 everything is coming up roses | entry by sven

how to say something without saying something? actually, there are some things in the pipeline, they seem safe, but it is still to soon to talk about. the fake picture above links the two events i´d like to tell you about: first of all the secret:
most of you will remember my participation for the blatt und dorn exhibition last year. the video work roses (after richter) was made for this show and i did not expect it to come up again. but without telling to much i am proud to announce that the roses will return in a great manner, you will fin out on my sites within the next weeks. there is a great exhibition coming up in february.

the other thing i´d like to tell you is an event where you will (hopefully) meet me in the audience. the museum folkwang comes up with another video sreening next friday. the last screening in september 2010 was great and a great overture for a friday night. so i would like to tell you something about the event even before it is over, so you might really have a chance to loin it.

screening v – spielplätze comes up with films and videos by corinna schnitt and some of her students. i´m sorry, i cannot tell you something about the artist or her work, but being extremely into video art i am open minded enough to just give it a try. so should you!

screening v – spielplätze
at museum folkwang, 7 pm
museumsplatz 1

the only useful video i could find on the web, only on spanish tv. the spanish dubbed interviews cannot be understood anymore, but you will have the original german sound in the featured video works. ?yo no hablas espaniol? (originally found here)

back and forth: the long wait is pausing again, but i have finally added cgi skies from other projects to this project. let´s see when we will bring it together...

2011-01-07 before the blogs, after the blogs | entry by sven

when i startet to write about some more personal things in 2003 and trying to offer some background to certain things i do and aim at, i did not think about how far it would take me and how important it might become.
i wish i could say it was all my idea, even the idea to call it "journal" was not mine (as far a i remember, in 2003 nobody knew what "bloggig" shuould be at all).

i was checking beck hanson´s website (which was looking great at that time) and i dicovered the journal, where he was writing about certain things he was up to. he did not find the time to post regularly and after five posts the section was shut down.
i thought it would be a great opportunity for an artist to keep in touch with you audience and demonstrate a certain presence, even if mainstream media ignores you. this thought turned out to be useful.

a few years later it became more popular to blog, everyone had a blog, sometime even to demonstrate that they had nothing to say or to despite their "friends". as often, technology develops faster that society and it´s needs, most people did not know what to do with it. i was thankful for more literatly working bloggers, turning their everyday life into funny stories, entertaining and open to interact.

after all these years, i am a little bit proud of still going on with it and recieving positive feedback from time to time. i just wanted to tell you and i wanted to explain, why we have cut out the "blogs" section from the navigation: most of them have closed or are no more expected to be updated.

if you have cool blog, tell me, we´ll put a link to it.
you want to post something in my journal?
go ahead! i want to communicate with you.
happy new year!

a snapshot from the evening songs final session last year. christoph kammer looked back and promised more in the future. i am working on a return to evening songs...with AESTATE or solo, this is a place where you can do experiments a lot, and this is what i will do. now that the eichbaum thing is over for me, i will concentrate on this cultural space to be filled. (photograph by stephan von knobloch)

when i first posted this image of a demo version of an idea, i told you that i´m not convinced. now i am. over the last two weeks i have been working on images and concepual texts concerning the river in the sky. ms best helped a lot again, we are so happy and convinced with it. more in spring...hopefully.

this is a challange: i have been taking pictures of the westruper heide since 2006, since 2009 i have been working on a video installation called the long wait combining these photographs, cgi, footage, processing and a soundtrack based upon AESTATE music. a big challange, i wanted to do a long piece and i have lost direction in it. i have quit it, now i´m trying to give it a new direction, shorter. i have found the right sound for it. i will look very analogue in the end, like a boards of canada fantasy. this is realy make or break, that´s why it takes so long, like the catalogue i am working on for months now...

the hammes collection shows my works of the collection, today for six weeks.
this exhibition is on private viewing only, please contact us for dates to view.
