2013-12-31 what remains is future | entry by sven

knowing that you have to post a final entry in thr journal can really put you under pressure. at the end of you year you look back automatically, and the public digital diary of mine (a.k.a. this site) helps me a lot to do it.

this year a lot things were new, not everything was good. actually it was about being sick or even just feeling sick, but also about discovering new stuff and friendship. i have learned to drop off tracks others have put me on, a hard experience and a long one, living with consequences is very easy when the decision was right. still, everything is becoming, nothing is done.
the jumping picture was done in september, even if there was a time when jumping was impossible, it is even more great to be able to do it and just do it.

in retrospective i am looking back on great events that i was allowed to be a part of. like every year i ask myself if i can top it?
doing bigger shows an discoverening new cities?

summing up, this year was productive: many shows (one solo), two eps with AESTATE, two dj sets (actually no live performance with AESTATE), a dvd, a sound installation, a performance, new tableaus, new videos, now plans for shows. what´s next?

this year made look a little bit more peaceful on my birthplace gelsenkirchen. i participated a lot of events there and saw some rebuild places. well, i like to go back from time to time, the own original hometown may be the worst in you personal perspective, actually it is never that bad...

'imaginary black forest' was the solo show being a model for what a show should be like. a mixture of performance, great people and art made this a great thing with a wild opening. big fun, maybe we just do shows to have big parties? well, that´s a good reason anyway.

aldi, i´ll have an eye on you. the transformation is not done compleatly, but documenting the old place was important for me in 2013. there will be a big feature when it is done...

my last picture for 2013, me in front of the big fake rock in gelsenkirchen on the 'wild island': 'monument for a forgotten future' by olaf nicolai and douglas gordon with mogwai. this time the stone did not sing. that reminds me that i should make more music...

big plans, still, best whishes, seeya in 2014

2013-12-29 at the gates of aldi, was it all worth it? | entry by sven

it was kind of funny when director and photographer matthias tränkle told me that he follows my documentation of the changing of keplerstraße 88, essen here on my journal. he said that he know the place but did not really under understand why i´m doing this until he got to know that this is the place i have been in living for ten years.

even more funny that it was him who dropped a line to inform me that the reborn aldi supermarket has finally opened. well, as you know i´m coming back from time to time quite regularly, but this info put me under pressure to post the first pictures of well known angles of the open maked in a half-finished building.

i remember the architect at the meeting explaining the idea to bringing the marked to the street, the 'backyard placing appeard a little bit old-fashioned'. this idea was worth to tear down three houses, a shop, garages and several old trees. and this is what it looks like. to be honest, i am not convinced, but i´ll have an eye on that and i can change my mind.

now and then, the upper picture was taken in october 2010 from my kitchen window, the lower picture yesterday. well, once there was a meadow, now there is a wall. it may sound strage, but i always thought this looked quite romantic, this big sixties block of flats with the meadow next to it, somehow beautiful and surreal, like a child would draw it.

still it feels strange that i moved way based upon a decision others have made for me (based upon their own profits) but returning from time to time makes you realize the losers of this game, actually the people who were not asked to go, now confronted with new perspectives of the world.

i thought a lot about democracy within the last days, does it mean that the majority is legitimated to ingore the needs of the minority? i guess the answer is not love, it is profit. (...as usually.)

if you have a closer look to the ground you can see the big 'X', once there was no parking slot, because here the tiny way lead to my house. now there is space for more shops. don´t foget to mention the exclusive appartments above!

the classic view from the back gets more and more boring. i am wondering for how long i will go on documenting the chance, when the metamorphosis will be compleated. i guess i will go on until february, two years afret announcing the chance...
maybe longer. let´s see.

2013-12-22 matthias danberg at kunstraum düsseldorf | entry by sven

you know i´m always skeptical concerning art awards. one reason might be that i´m often ignored by juries, another one could be the witnessing of objectively obscure choices. however, sometimes it even hits the right one anyway. this year matthias danberg receives the ‘prize for fine arts of the city of düsseldorf 2013’ which led to a great show.

matthias and me first met about a year and a half ago, both working with digital image production and similar software, interested to check the skills and conceptual approach of the other, looking for a gap in the flood of artist to be placed in. we met a few times and talked a lot about art and our backgrounds and the issue of using a production method which is still not familiar to many visitors and collectors. since then a lot has changed, his work expanded and was shown at the right places.

his videos and prints are brilliant, technically perfect and naturally impressive. approaches to his work appear difficult, often reduced to the technical aspect ignoring the design and sculptural abilities to be inherent in is scenarios. strange things happen at strange places, sometimes reminding of historically dark chapters but never focusing them, sometimes reminding of steampunk, sometimes future, sometimes what would remain from the future. however, you might wonder if the scenes even take place on this planed at all. everything is perfectly timed and synchronized, whenever a clear idea forms while watching it slips away within the next second. without any doubt, even the perfect production would generate great art, but the conceptional layer even proofs it is, even when it is often neglected when his work is discussed. these new worlds are still in need to be discovered…

the picture above was taken during the opening of his current show at kunstraum düsseldorf, well, as you see it turned out to be another buddy picture, (please notice the collection of scarves for men having a cold) from left to right: me, matthias and wolfgang van triel. i reported in summer when we met for a lecture about multiple dimensions within artworks and surveillance.

you might remember me calling us ‘the triumvirate of tomorrow´s art’. (2013-07-21 close encounters of multiple dimensions | entry by sven) well, as you see, matthias is verifying my prediction, wolfgang is producing diasecs for his next show. that´s pressurizing me a little, don’t you think?

some impressions from the show. being known for strong black and white aesthetics, new works come up coloured and even more dynamic. you can watch the show until 2014-02-09 and join an artist talk on 2014-01-23. find our yourself over at

2013-12-14 buddy pictures at the openings / artist talk | entry by sven

this has really become a tradition. whenever i have a picture on a public wall i have to make a picture showing me next to it. a strange tradition, somehow a little bit stupid, but hey, i´m not alone with it as you will see. the psychologist might say that 'selfies' are one´s own proof for the own existance, here even more of the existence bound to a certain activity. there might be some truth in it.

last saturday the kunstmuseum mülheim opened the annual exhibition of the local artists featuring my work for the first time. unfortunately, i have cought a bad cold and had to visit the opening all alone, actually in fear of missing the classic shot. i was even more surprised to meet old and new friends.

the classic picture above was taken by composer michael em walter and i´m in need to say that this was his idea!!!
well, i had the chance to return the favour:

michael next to his favourite. 'shedhead' really makes his way to become a small icon. by the way, if you are along term visitor to my site, mr walter might look familiar to you. about a hundred years ago we had a band together called dissident(en) club. just for your records...

yet another classic buddy picture: galerie143 fellow artist marco wittkowski and myself in front of our works during the opening of this year´s 'offene galerie'. unfortunately, we are covering our works compleatly, so check them out a little further below or visit the gallery!
like me, marco is woking with photography and his work also has a great refletion of the medium, experimenting with the classic technology and new experimemntal ways of image production. even though the starting point of the medium is similar, our work differs a lot from one another, i guess that´s why we fit perfectly into the gallery programm.

2013-12-04 action scales up the empty room to a stage | entry by sven

i´m keen to artistic things all the way, but i know my own limitations to visual stuff and sound. last thursday i was witnessing the power of acting performance again. during the opening of this year´s KPR claudia maurer directed ‘sie haben heut´abend gesellschaft’, a one person piece performed by ariane raspe, pictured above as photographed by thomas leidig.
i have not idea what good acting or directing is. sure, i´m fascinated by bryan cranston or naomi watts, but i have no idea where they take it from, the depth of feelings pretended to be there. i did videos for AESTATE and others, gave instructions for ‘meeting point’, but that isn´t really serious directing.

claudia maurer´s idea appears quite simple: the empty room turns into a stage as soon as someone is performing an action while someone else is watching. probably the most simple idea of theatre – or more general: staging. ‘sie haben heut´abend gesellschaft’ follows these principles, a minimal set-up (a chair and a costume) only and one actor generating a tight atmosphere of rituals and phrases during a night at a stiff party. actually, i can transfer the indices for quality from artworks to performance: the less elements you have the more you have to use them accurately. usually i see the trick but believe in the magic anyway, here i do not even see the trick...
directing and acting remains a mystery to me, even when i was so close. this week i was asked to act in a short spot, performing speech inclusive dubbing afterwards. for my own standards i was pretty good, but i guess i won´t go on focusing on acting… i know my limits.

so have an eye on the ones who know how to do it right:
find out about claudia maurer, her project ‘der leere raum’ and everything on learning to act and the scheduled plays over at
der-leere-raum.de

the KPR stage: claudia did not like the red curtains, i thought they were pretty good fitting. well, that´s the difference between directing a play and creating a picture. however, you always need to focus on what you actually want...

my contribution to the KPR: minimal and simple, but indicating depth in meaning, making a lot of people stop and stare, think and discuss. this piece actually worked a lot better at this place than expected.

stats update: that´s funny, after claudia shared my post via facebook, the access numbers really increased, actually a lot more than expected. as you see now, i´m not very high frequented, so step by from time to time.

2013-12-01 a roof like a house with a wall like a fortress | entry by sven

just another quick update from the building site. as you see, the flat supermarket building is crowned with a roof that makes it more look like a house, something you would expect from a classical point of view. so far, it appears a lot more boring than expected...

a rear view: before there was only a small medow with a sign forbidding to play soccer, now walls are rising around a small way into the new yard behind the market building. honestly, this feels like a fortress.

flashback? no, this looks a little bit like it looked like one year ago but it was taken yesterday, just ten meters apart. the serial buildings of three rows has lost only one, the one next to it looks like a replica made from memory. strange, feeling foreign and familiar at the same time.

updated views below:

we will have to make on own feature site for it. i´m curious when the process will be over... what am i going to stalk then!?

2013-11-19 my oldest non-human friend, drifting for decades | entry by sven

there is a saying telling that books are better friends because they don´t take but only give. i never really understood, because i´m no big reader of fiction or classic literature. but the principle of having a certain relationship to certain works is familiar to me like to everyone else.

at the beginning of ocober we went back to the hoge veluwe and the kröller-müller-museum and it´s sculpture park. visiting the park (especially in autumn) became like a ritual, i always have to check certain things here, especially marta pan´s sculpture flottante ‘otterlo’ (1960 - 1961) or short nicknamed 'swantje' as it is referred to.
i have reported before that i´m not into sculpture but this one really strikes me.

when i was a child my family visited the park with my father`s photographer collegues and their families. decades later i remembered situations and images, culptures like the swantje and the 'needle tower' but i could not remember the name or location of it (how could i, i´ve been a child). when we went back to the park incidentally a few years ago it was like coming home, or returning to a place that seemed out of reach. and the swantje was still there, drifting for decades, it was there for decades when i was a child and i will probalby be drifting when i´m old.

this sculpure is like a reliable friend sharing a common past. and it reminds me of the qualities of my human friends, there are only a few but all of them are reliable like a drifting sculpture.

so there was the need to do the cheeky buddy-picture as to be seen above. and in order to guard against misunderstandings, i still prefer human friends, no doubt. but be aware: there is a dutch children's book around telling the story of the swantje coming to life at night looking for a mate. we should check the park at night...

thinking about this certain sculpure is recently based upon some thoughts dealing with my own position in making art, about the scary business issues, the feeling of doing too much in production and showing and the questioning of maybe having already reached the climax of what i am able to do concerning profit, prestige and satisfaction. the swantje seems to drift unaffected of all these issues, it relates to itself, self-confident and autonomous. somehow it teaches the great principles of being a great artwork and maybe also a happy human being.

marta pan´s sculpture flottante ‘otterlo’, 1960 - 1961. (2011)
what do you think?

here is a future classic: rob sweere´s 'hub' (2008) is also floating, not on a puddle but hovering in the woods fixed by steel cables. it is one of the sculptures you are free to touch and to climb into. this peace is like a submarine and if you lay down in it, you can drift away sometimes...

an additional picture from the last days, taken during a foggy night. the session beard no good photographs but an incidentally nice picture of the moon. i thought i should share this one with you.

2013-11-04 quo vadis, big business? blooom art fair and C.A.R. | entry by sven

as you might know, i´m addicted to every exhibition going on, i´m even joining the art cologne every year. even if i complain about the high prices and the desorientation of trends, i cannot drop out of the tradition. the last weekend had been an even more exciting experience, the blooom art fair in cologne opened featuring a gallery representing me. no need to say, that i had to join, no need to mention that i will be even more critical while checking the competitors.

above you see wolfgang van triel and myself at the vernissage (why did they call it that way?) running through the overcrowded chambers of the halls. wolfgang is as critical as i am, maybe we see to much to really understand certain positions?

this fair is mixing up setteld galleries with moderate and high prices with new dealers, in the low and middle segment. what actually scares me a little bit is the vanishing of video and photography and the flood of street art stuff. prints and "toys", multi-coloured and screaming for attention, telling flat jokes and an overall pseudo-criticism of politics, advertising and society. everything appears flat, decorative, from a dealer´s view this might make perfect sense, young collectors do not have much time and the even hotter stuff is waiting nearby. purchase before you lose interest instead of getting into deeper concepts.

different professional working artists have told me before that they hate the selling business, and i never understood. there is an underlying dilemma: the artist works hard on a concept or a certain work, invests much, but within the selling process all these creative or conceptional decisions do not play any role. collectors decide on a different level, the dealer tries to serve that, and the artist cannot understand.

there is no solution for the dilemma, and i am accepting my self-chosen role and have to trust the gallery in doing the business.
these two worlds share the same space, hopefulle they do not collide.

plus: wolfgang van triel and i are working on a collaborative series, the first idea came up during the 'imaginary black forest' opening, we did some postproduction together and will come up with it next year, nothing is fixed recently. you should be excited, there is funny stuff coming up.

the gallery plate of galerie143. simone czech did a great job and even when i am scared of the big business, i trust her strategies, because next to the dealing stuff she is also into art very much and has a deep understanding for what i do. summing it up, i´m happy to be a part of it, of the gallery and even so of the art fair.

also the contemporary art ruhr / C.A.R. opened on friday. as i was disappointed of it in the last years, it wasn´t on my agenda anymore. this year, michaela recieved a vip-ticket, so we could have a look before it became to crowded and i was surprised. the fair is of course a lot smaller but not less interesting. in a positive way, this fair is even less "hip", they are not trying to be cool, they are more into showing positions, series and larger concepts of single artists and gallery programs.
i have even bought a catalogue, well, this fair still "dares" to show photography and video, and my feeling here is that a lot of art and business contacts appear a little bit more long lasting... but this is just my perception. also: the galleries from south-korea always have great stuff. they really undersand to link tradition to the contemporary work.
okay, c.a.r., you´ve convinced me, see you next year!

after the colour overload on the blooom vernissage i went back to check the fair again on saturday. i got my artist card saying "galerie143 / sven piayda / artist" which made me feel extremly important. well, if you have some time and are in the right mood, you can dicover a lot better the hidden masterpices. you really need time and thursty eyes to take something home.
art fairs want to trigger love at first sight, i guess you´ll need a seconfd time to make it happen...

2013-11-01 level 2, would you like to live here? | entry by sven

after a while i was back taking taking pictures from my former home turning into a supermarked and "exclusive appartments" (whatever this my mean). this is always leading me to the question if would like to live here. i guess no.

anyway, it is strange, i met a friend these days who could not visit me at the new place so far. he said that he thinks of me in the old appartemt running around, a place in which we spend time together, watched movies and had parties. even when i close my eyes i can still see every inch of dust on the tiles, the trees outside and the sun shining through the bathroom window in spring mornings.
i have to make sure that it looks like that anymore. sure, i do not want to go back but it was good for the time it had lasted.
and a lot of that time was good.

further below i have added two more pictures to the collection showing the process, the upper one from yesterday, the second one from some weeks ago, you can see the second level coming up.
to be continued...

would you like to live here? i don´t. well, the workers have to. these are the interim habitats making sure they have a short way to work. it feels really stange to see people live there after work, it is somehow reminding me of refugee camps. they have to tear up good houses to build up a supermarket with penthouses for the rich while sleeping in big tin boxes.

scary and strange, isn´t it? i´m am surprised everytime looking at this series. maybe i should turn this into a flip-book!?

galerie143 is recently at the blooom art fair, i was joining the vernissage meeting wolfgang van triel. we are working on a collaboration project, by the way.
recently, i cannont say something about the fair, still discussing with myself if i should go back this weekend for another impression.
to be reported...

2013-10-27 a brunch at mudam with friends | entry by sven

i remember seeing the mudam for the first time and i have to admit it was love at first sight. having a weakness for small countries (and benelux generally) we had to come to luxembourg in 2011 for the first time without any fixed plans like astronauts on a far away planet. discovering the city was great, roaming through the grund, the clausen and finally upward the hill discovering the mudam finally.

the architecture of the mudam is great, there is now way to enter without being deeply impressed, this impression is only topped by the constantly fantastic curated shows in this temple for contemporary art. in 2011 we stepped into the OUT-OF-SYNC show discovering laurent montaron and finally seeing david claerbout´s "untitled (man under arches)". this show was a big inspiration, loud like an invocation.

we returned in summer 2011 and kept in touch, being thankful for all features on facebook as well as postal goodies kept us aware and interested. well, this museum doesn't make it difficult to be a fan.
last christmas the mudam came up with a funny facebook competition triggering our interest as always and made us participate without thinking. the museum had sent out christmas cards before containing decoration for the tree. we were asked to contribute a picture of us next to the mudam decorated tree and post it on the public bulletin board of the official mudam facebook site. well, we have won, actually not only because our picture is extremely beautiful, also because there were no competitors…

however, we made it and the mudam invited us for brunch, for 13 in ´13. well, even after winning in the last days of 2012 it took us 10 month to organize to go there, coming from germany it was nearly impossible to synchronize 13 people and make them book and pay a hotel (next to traveling on their own) to get a brunch for free…
after many delays and imponderables we had finally formed a group of eight to go there last sunday, my birthday and a great way to spend it, by the way.
above you see us in the café, we form a funny group ready for art and brunch - what else should a sunday be like?

and that´s a close-up of our brunch, tasty indeed. when you take a look around you will find lot of people coming in for brunch that you do not see in the exhibition afterwards… a seal of quality for the great mudam café.

the café is somehow something like architecture within architecture, a table/roof construction by erwan und ronan bouroullec making the big rooms of the museum comfy. somehow it also feels a little bit like a picnics outside. above you see a picture from an older visit, below other brunchers joining us.

the walk through the museum afterwards was obligatoric. the mudam always runs a show worth visiting. this time it was great to see lutz & guggisberg again, a swiss collective with a very unique sense of humour next to lee bul, leaving me without deeper understanding but impressed by the enourmous quantity and quality of works, disciplines and concepts for exhibition. as i do not want to violate any copyrights (and personal rights) i just want to show you these snapshots above. well, you should check out the show yourself anyway.

and the winner is… above you see the picture making us win the brunch as taken under our christmas tree. it is unbelievable how far you can get when you stop worrying if you a making a fool of yourself!
footnote: the gifts under the tree are not really gifts, just stuff we bought at that time, but a tree needs some stuff under it.

remembering the first time: as i have written above, i remember the first moment when i saw the mudam after reaching for the right way to it the first half of the day. fortunately, i took a picture, and well, this is it.

summing it up, we like to thank the mudam for this special event, for initializing it and being so patient with us. all experiences with the mudam are totally positive, the café, the art and the service, we always faced friendly, helpful and well-organized people from the staff. even among global players, that´s no standard.

no need to believe me, find out yourself!
mudam.lu

we will return asap and say thank you.

luxembourg is always worth a trip, autumn makes it even more seductive. the centre next to the grund and the view on the adolphe bridge appear as the perfect place to start.
let´s return soon, maybe together?

2013-10-22 a night with brigitte in luxembourg | entry by sven

time was up to spend a day far away from home, birthdays are often better in another country. we returned to luxembourg, actually connecting this trip with the brunch at MUDAM cafe escorted by some friends. it took about ten months to organize it, but i would like to report later ablout this, because the night before wasn´t less great.

after getting our group of friends together, after a long quest for getting a table in a restaurant without booking we took the lift in the middel of luxembourg to go down into the grund. finding a fitting pub for all of us was also a challenge, fortunately we ended up with brigitte!
knowing that you like headlines with innuendoes promising erotic adventures i should tell you now that brigitte is a pop-up bar, a kind of interim house build into a bigger house in need of renovation and being rennovated. i don´t have to tell you that i´m into these concepts, you might know my fascination for the eichbaum based opernbauhütte.

the fact of being an pop-up interim space makes it even more exclusive, knowing it can vanish as quickly as it has shown up.
when you are in luxembourg, you must go there, if possible bring some friends with you. (i cannot show imges of us, you would not like to see how we look while making party).
there is only a facebook site, better than nothing, let´s have an eye on it: facebook.com/BrigitteLuxembourg

let there be light: lampshades, curtains and big bulbs. provisory constructions are so beautiful when you are not at home. we hould try stuff, a lot of it s inspiring, but we don´t dare to try it. however, inspiration need incubation.

the toilets don´t have a mirror but a lion. a long hallway leads into the shed. here are some animated flash/non-flash gifs based upon photographs by michaela giving you the idea of the beat between these compressed wood walls.

the core of us after closing at 1am. the boys need to take pictures, the girls want to go home. our thrid visit to the city proved that all the interesting places are a lot closer together than remembered. you can go long without a car (if you find a place to park it).

being out with friends is like being back to school on a school trip, except that everyone´s cool and having fun. the city never sleeps, sirens all around, sometimes it looks belgian but it sounds american.

the grund: maybe the most fascinating thing about luxembourg is the grund, the abyss in the midlde if the centre covering the park, the klausen and somthing looking like a historic district. looking down on it feels like a model railroad layout, actually colder and more wet than above. on the upper image you have a great view on the grund, you can even see the MUDAM at the horizon (a small glass dome at the feet of the left skyscraper), on the lower image you see the back of brigitte, a terace coverd with drapes. a great place to be.

2013-10-08 places i´ve been to / busy studio days | entry by sven

there is nothing special to say recently. we are having a busy studio day here but it is once again not about making art (or music sometimes) but business and making it happen. we are not managing everything on schedule, it is much, many small projects to care about.

as there is nothing special, i have collected some pictures of the last days wich made me aware that i was at a lot of places within the last days, some very beautiful, some more cracked up.
well, here is just a tiny collection of some, more to come this year, as i´ve said, we are busy here.

michaela took a great picture of me in de hoge veluve last year, and here is the 2013 version of it. always searching for the best view...
it is strange how fast a year rushes by, but a lot happend actually.

visiting the tetraeder in bottrop served a great view on my former hometown essen. here i filmed the 'kite' video piece. i hope to place it in a show next year. this is what we worked on today, next to other things. (it will be available online soon. this will be the first time you will be able to watch a an art video piece of mine in the net)

a creepy place for an exhibition, very small and cracked up, there is no real believe that this can turn into something great. anyway, confirming means to go through it, let´s see what happens...

my friend benjamin nachtwey is recently showing his works in the new showroom of galerie kabuth which is placed below a fitness studio in gelsenkirchen. we agreed that this is supposed to look like berlin, but it feels like the bronx.
highly recommended: benjamin nachwey 'places i´ve been'
, galerie kabuth, gelsenkirchen: galerie kabuth showroom

2013-09-29 role shifting: artist, tourist and collector | entry by sven

making and presenting art is a great thing, being in an ongoing procces all the time keeps me moving. i like to do exhibitions and i like to join the shows by others. being part of a 'scene' feels good here, this seems to be the only scene with no fixed rules and roles (which is also not true, actually).
last friday i was up for some art and had to check out the museum folkwang exhibition 'ausstellen' which appeared quite disappointing to me, while schütte´s 'frauen' made me develop interest for his sculptues for the first time.

later we joined oscar ledesma´s 'kavikula', his closing show at his new atelier. for the second time this year he is forced to leave his atelier and show room. from the amont of paintings he had produced i was always fascinated by the dark madonna of 'reina de mexico'. well, what can i say, we talked about the situation, about common plans and his pictures, and there was an opptotunitiy and i was somehow forced to purchase...
well, i´m a collector now. as many shows attract 'tourists' (people who just watch) and artists (people who check the business rivals and search for opportunities), they sometimes have collectors. (people who actually buy). having accepted myself in the first two roles i am now also in the third one: artist, tourist and collector.

a last look into the atelier, i hope to se oscar work and show soon again. if have an empty room in need to be filled, feel free to tell us!

our performance 'optimus maximus' might return one day, anyway, there are always ideas for collaborations in the orbit. enjoy our funny little piece and wonder, where you have been...

we did it again (more tourist activities): bredevoort schittert a strange festival in the dutch city nearby. actually you walk around and ask yourself how you have got there, and why. funny, strage, entertaining, irritating.
see you next year, cowboy!

2013-09-17 tinkrather festspiele and p.s.t.d.f.e. documentary | entry by sven

you might remember me telling you about my concept for the tinkrather festspiele in spring and summer, now they are already over. when i have a lot effort in doing pieces which are available only for a short time (in this case only one night) i like to make sure that there is a good documentation, which helps to remember and to "save" what was made.

assembling the artist in residence concept made me learn a lot about myself, my work and artists in general. the working together at the same place was inspiring, calming and sometimes driving me nuts. my own structure often forces me to be focussed on a certain result, while it is often more useful to not control everything for any reason. learning to relax even while producing is still a challange for me.
next to the documentary, i have a sound work now i wanted to do for years, i have adapted another disciplin here. you can listen to it via /CAMP or maybe you´ll get the cd edition...

above you see the documentary based upon material i have shot it not very professionally during the whole night including dusk. the sound is reconstructed, i did not want to have peoples private talk in it, but the 'piano strings to drone for eternity' piece without any hard cuttings. sometimes the combination of the shown installations and my sound appears quite scary, but they are not meant to be, my work is strictly conceptional, about an event with its natural time of exsitance (the struck string and its sustain) and the conceptional infinite time expand by the medium (the digital stretching creating a drone sound within the reproduction in media).
the video gives a good idea of the atmosphere at the tiny festival. maybe we´ll meat there next year?
feel free to share!

once again some pictures from the kuno park showing some installations.

to have the full package, the teaser for my work, shot, recorded and edited on monday before the festival here you can see how the strings are struck.

another music related art piece from this year: oscar ledesma reading and myself playing guitar during our performance 'optimus maximus' at the finisssage of our common solo shows at clowns & pferde this summer. well, this is less art, it was more a joke to attract people to join our show closing. well, the idea to present something funny worked pretty good, see...?!

2013-09-09 new pictures from a building site | entry by sven

the place which used to be my home was meant to be changed into a supermarket, i´ll try to step by from time to time and take some pictures. as you see above it already looks like a building site now, new stuff is coming up. this is the appearance from last week (please appreciate the great whether) it might have grown already.

further below i have added two more pictures from the classic angel point of view, showing "clear" ground in august and the buisy building site in september. i´ll be adding stuff...

above you mightget an idea how near the building site is getting to the remaining houses, i would not like to sit on the terrace now, would you? also, the ground has new tube systems, my dream was that maybe some plants of my garden would survive secretly in the ground and break through one day through the floor of the superparket. well, this dream may not come true.

now and then, an ongoing change. strange, the first and the last picture seem to have nothing in common. it is a place erased for a new one.

2013-08-27 making of 'piano strings to drone for eternity' | entry by sven

this little event has been announced weeks ago parallelly to the fact i was supposed to contribute something. as the original conception of the "51. tinkrather festspiele" was about sound in general, i developed a sound piece fitting into my concept when it comes to working in the context of art.

even years ago i found an old, deconstructed piano in kuno´s studio. as i was told it was already used within performances, now it was just stored between different stuff, covered with dust from sculptural work. since i had discovered the "instrument" i always wanted to work with it, to step by with my multi-track recording machine. actually, that has never happened until now. the request to do a sound related work at the atelier fitted perfectly to idea to record some sounds from the piano.

the set.up is quite simple, a microphone next to the strings, that´s it. one track for the middle, more recordings for overdubs left and right. as you might imagine you cannot really play certain tunes in an accurate way. it is more hitting and experiencing what happens.
as the atelier and park is full of working artists, it was hard not to record to many noises from the outside, i even recorded a beat made for orientation, which was supposed to not on the final piece. anyway, the piece is somehow connected to the place of the atelier anyway and you can hear kuno´s voice somewhere in the middle of the piece.
i originally wanted to do a cd edition, but i have decided to do not because time is too short and we can do it later.
the sound piece will be running over one hour, the cd version of 'piano strings to drone for eternity' is supposed to contain two tracks: 'now' (original recording) and 'forever' (10 times stretched version as played during the festival)

here is the official teaser with some swinging strings. you can listen to two minutes from 'piano strings to drone for eternity (forever)'

some impressions from the park, here without any decoration or installing. here is the official invitation:

Samstag, 31.8.2013 ab 18.00, Programm bis 22.00 Uhr
Geboten werden musikalische Überraschungen, romantische Licht-Spiele und künstlerische Darbietungen aus verschiedenen Genres - indoor und outdoor
Für Getränke ist gesorgt, wie immer bitten wir um Spenden für's Buffet.

2013-08-25 drunk in the rain, returnings | entry by sven

summer comes up with common situations and events. you probably do the same thing again and again, then you complain that it is always the same. if do something different which turns out as stupid, you complain about having left a good tradition. it is a dilemma. yesterday i was back at the freilichtbüne for the lichtkunstfestival, a small traditional and very local festival in mülheim. i offered performing with AESTATE some months ago, unfortunately without any answer, yesterday i was happy to step by only as a visitor. the summer presented it´s wet side and the installations appeared reduced and limited, so i was quite happy to leave after getting watery and a little drunk in the dark.

i am the audience i usually dislike. watching things without understanding, moving on without thinking.

the great thing with meeting friends in a rainy night in an illuminated park is that you will probably end up in a restaurant or pub (or the thing in between). well, i had my first pickled egg (after watching the celebrated preparing performance before to make right. actually it appears to be science to get the egg ready for consumption. well, we should do that from time to time.

more returning: we thought we about to go back to museuminsel hombroich, you see me now and back in 2010 on a bench in a pavilion. i remember having a bad time in 2010, about realizing the end of certain friendships and feeling of being abandoned, today some of these things are settled, some may remain topics to discuss for oneself. and: my style looks a lot better today!

2013-08-17 sleeping dogs …in bruges | entry by sven

as you might have already read we had the chance to visit brugge (or bruges) some weeks ago, but we were not too enthusiastic about it. everybody tells that it is so great and beautiful, for us it appeared a little bit too crowded and not striking beautiful. a lot of people said they wanted to go there because of the movie “in bruges” (german title: “brügge sehen…und sterben?”) by martin mcdonagh. the movie is about two professional killers sent to bruges to wait for further instructions. here colin farrell portrays a character who is not very happy about being in this city, while his partner is fascinated of the medieval art and architecture. as they are boating through the reie, the movie comes up with some snapshot scenes to give some impressions of the city. and then we saw this funny pic of a dog in a window as pictured above. wait a minute, i know this dog!

as i was going through the photographs taken in bruges i found the dog again, drowsy in the window. he must probably spend a lot of time there, back in 2008 when the film was shot and five years later when we saw him. maybe you can learn from that. hollywood superstars are everywhere, so watch out!

2013-08-12 eichbaumgold: the past inside the present | entry by sven

wow, that was probably the surprise of this summer. the social network worked perfectly, so i recieved the invitation to further actions a the eichbaum station and the opernbauhütte. once again, i will not tell my connection to it once again, but me and a few other people working there at a certain time in 2009 still feel deeply connected to this place. so i have very sceptical view on that.
the reopening has a lot of potential to become something great, but also something horrible again. and there is some bitter aftertase: after closing the project of the eichbaumoper i witnessed the decay of the builiding and the place, all partners of the opera project disappeard, the opernbauhütte did become a an annoying left-over — now it is surprisingly rediscovered...!?

project head markus ambach promises local musicians and contemporary positions after the high culture of the opera. well, i remember having a scene around the opera with electronic music, deejaying, spraying, live concerts escorting the opera. after every effort of the local supporters had been extinct all these things are now newly brought to this place.
anyway, i hope we will see some great stuff theer again, and i hope for AESTATE to return, because this is was the place made for us and it worked perfectly together, i hope to bring that back again.
well, however, i hope for the best, but i will remain sceptical...

whenever i´m at the hütte i have to make a shot from the same angle, stupid ritual, again and again, but it helps to understand the process, or at least the change. the opernbauhütte appears gold now, that looks funny at first but does not deliver any deeper meaning. artists martin pfeifle and wanda sebastian tell nothing additionally to the fact that it is gold now. the erasing of the former graffiti on blue containers is not mentioned. only a few people are around who remember, that this place alread has a history which could be easily continued. well, this is inventing the well-known.

a photo mosaic on the inside reminds us on the climax of the eichbaumoper, the opea within the station, the the place you would normally leave in fear into a cultural place to be. looking back, it feels like the memory of a fairy tale, this place has it´s own rules and falls quickly back it waht it is: a dark and dangerous hole.

the letters on the station may illustrate the transformation at its best. the old red letters appear like fossils, transformed into a new word by rough-and-ready gold letters. here i can feel some past inside the present, only here.

stefan schneider and sven kacirek performed a sound installation. it was hard to understand, if this was performing live music or just monitoring an installed a sound work. schneider turned his back to the audience and kacirek was discovered after the half of the set in the woods under the bridge. as the music piece was probably set as the climax of the re-opening the quite large audience decided to leave.

a history of breaking up: all these pictures once again are made in the time after the opera time, during events trying to bring back life, often without the success of having something to stay. every time i was in the top level i made the same picture in the same posture, assuming this would be the last time in it. now i´m surprised to do that again, i guess it won´t be the last time now. i don´t know how to feel about that.

2013-07-29 antwerp: new discoveries in the compulsive round | entry by sven

spending time off always leads into rituals, going back to places you know while remembering a good time there. as you are clever enough to realize that you cannot bring back that one great day at this place you look for new places. this year we went to brugge which was, hm, disappointing. but we were clever enogh to put the known place on the route. (strange logic...)
antwerp is one of our favourite cities and it is always great to spend the time there. we have been there often enogh to make me feel home a little bit, actually we know the cool places to go, all the museums, the gallery quarter, our cafe and the streets full of curiosa and design. well, this is just the overture to a visit as unusual combined with some cherry on the cream...
(just for the record: above you see me in the inside of the MAS, a kind of mix up between a museum space and a platform for a wide view. we did´nt check the show but had to check it from the inside and the top for a great view. well, this was just mid-level, i hope to put on a pict to the portfolio as shot from the roof...)

my fascination for this city is also connected with my interest in the work of david claerbout. whenever we were around we stepped to the galerie micheline szwajcer but have always faced closed doors. this time was different. as we had lunch in the zurich cafe and realised quite surprised that this is the also the street where the galerie micheline szwajcer must be. i went into it just to check if we were right and i finally found open doors!
as we stepped in, a very friendly gallery assitant explained that the gallery usually has a summer break and thet the last exhibition is already over. but, as we explained our interest in claerbout she was so friendly to start a still installed recent work of him for us. so we had the chance to see breathing bird (suite) from 2012. additionally she explained thet that the MKHA was recently showing works of their collection including a claerbout video and three drawings. it was clear that we had to go there...
(once again, thanks for this encounter!)

well, visiting the the MKHA has a long tradition. i would like to post some pictures from the show but i do not want to provoke copyright issues, so i just come up with the classic self-portaits at the toilets.
as i have already reported in 2009, they offer toilet entries for men, artists and women, i ended up in the "men" titled room again. you see the picture of 2009 and below the last friday´s 2013 update.
my haircut is so much cooler today!

also we had some few days off. this is the bar at the beach where we have spend most of our evenings. a cool place to be and to remember. we need to go back!

i also want to make a summer break for the studio and do other stuff but somehow it always moves on. taking pictures, processing looking for competitions and stuff. it is a machine that never stops. well, here is a study i have compleated some weeks ago, based upon video material filmed in 2009 in the netherlands. i hope it will give you some holliday feelings before moving on to the everday stuff.

2013-07-21 close encounters of multiple dimensions | entry by sven

last thursday i had the chance to visit the k-camp in düsseldorf, a free lecture program escorting K20 exhibitions in the foyer of the museum. as i am also playing around with different dimensions while building up sculptures in the virtual world, these topics have a certain meaning for me and appeard as a must see/visit. turning this even more into a great experience, i did not go there alone. as you see above this is the triumvirate of tomorrow´s art: from left to right: myself, cgi enfant terrible matthias danberg and photographer mate/ collaborator wolfgang van triel.

we were guided through lectures about how to animate a virtual character, 20th century approaches to further dimensions and the spying out data to make the world and its people more transparent and flat. the k-camp was inspiring with approximations concerning the topic, actually dealing with phenomenons you cannot illustrate or even make them captable.

we ended up in long discussion concerning the authenticy of the medium and the term of freedom bound to a certain political or religious system. it would be great to turn these things into exhibition projects. lot of things are possible here, if we really manage to come up with collborations you should not miss it.

prof. tim bruysten lead through the evening, we will have an eye on this project and hope to join in september again. maybe you are with us? set up for A E R O / D Y N A M I C.

i´m not he one to find in the tourist areas in düsseldorf, but we could not resist to avoid to have a drink at the river.

as i was honored to teach the opticians this year and have them given over their certificates as usually at the gasometer in oberhausen i joined the ceremony, followed by a guided tour through the gasometer and the current "air package" exhibition by christo and jeanne-claude.
i am not that enthusiastic about their work, but next to all you can read or learn about them and the big impression the manpower and time the projects swallow i can tell you that photographs cannot capture the feeling of a poetic moment these things provoke. maybe it happens, maybe not. it´s expensive to do anyway. reminds my of my own work...

2013-07-16 sichtwerk aftermath and impressions | entry by sven

sichtwerk is a must see, of course, being sceptical and full of fascination, reflecting my own startings (and failures). anyway, after the students had been banned from the zeche and went into the university´s basement, the SANAA building appears to be the perfect place for their work now.

every piece in this show comes from a certain context which is not allways clear. you can see it´s quality anyway, so wacthing without knowing i a big pleasure. i´ve been out of university for along time now, but i´m always thankful for finding familiar names, from the art scene (thank god, i´m still in) and from my former students (oh my god, i´m out!). i even meet a friend and ex-gallerist telling me that he is proud to find works in the show by artists he had exhibited in his gallery. i always wanted to write senteces like this one!!!

i always have an eye on photography (if possible post-photography) an i guess there is the full range, stuff i don´t understand and mindblowing positions. this sichtwerk has also reaceted on contemporary economic trends, the idea of recycling in the sense of re-using design in a new content (which is probably THE position of postmodern designers) and the idea of utensils which can be repaired easily. to be honest, a great idea leading to good designs, a user friendly approach, buying a coffee machine or ruck-sack that will escort you for the rest of your life. honestly, this is a nightmare for a system based upon consumption to generate profit. indeed, we need some new ideas here.

summing it up, this was a great sichtwerk, good stuff, good ideas, a professional set up and high hopes for tomorrow´s art and design.
these are my future competitors? i´ll be on the watch...

an impression from high above, bookmaking, generative printmaking and photography.

the other way around: typography and a monster running around to make people visit the horror cinema.

not an artwork but a genious strike: the plateau in the middle of the level offers you a good overall view on the show (see above), it also a new way to experience and understand the room concept of the SANAA building. and after being sceptical for years i am a big fan now. okay, students, i´m looking forward to the next show...

2013-07-15 white nights aftermath and impressions | entry by sven

well, that was new: the white nights are in the raffelbergpark and there is no rain, no thunder, no storm. okay, it was quite cold at night, even when the days appeard to be quite hot, but anyway...
the theater an der ruhr came up with a kind of best-of of their current (and long term) plays an offerd a full range of their way of interpreting and reconstructing plays.

of course i could not be there every night, but we managed to check out the first night to see if everything is fine, we returned for a play and the other night just for music an cocktails. a brilliant plan, indeed!
after all these years of joining the white nights you probably know what to expect and that it is a unique and fragile thing. noone has money in the cultural scene, so how can you ask for more if they offer something for free?

some heard voices complained about less illumination and less offers concerning drinks making a reduced atmosphere. well, this may sound stange, but maybe there is routine in it, with all it´s good and bad aspects. let´s remember the good ones. this is a good thing.

wacthing the play from the last row, having a great rear view. a classic picture, this is the 2013 update.

roberto ciulli uses the break in 'DOÑA ROSITA ODER DIE SPRACHE DER BLUMEN' for expessing his fascination for frederico garcia lorca, filled with background information helping to get the play. actually a merged version of different lorca plays.

the music once again surrounded the plays, on a high level as usually, see saturday´s frank wuppinger & l’orchestre europe. actually, this year was quite classical, less electronic and experimental. i was missing counting drummers and expanded guitars as well as telephones ringing...

and this is the perfect place for cocktails in a white night. to sum it up, i had a half mochito (!) and i guess it was even less. the girls had more, that was not my plan. i´ll have to work it out for next year.
are you ready for next year?

2013-07-09 white nights and sichtwerk, leisure stress ahead | entry by sven

once again i can realize how quickly a year rushes by. well, a lot things happenend. here we come up with the cultural climax of the year, somewhere between high culture and leisure. i cannot miss a single event.
even if i´m not that much into theatre, i love the white nights at theater an der ruhr and the raffelbergpark next to it. and of course the opportunity to take photographs of yourself being colourful illuminated at night. so this is me doing the full moon a the white nights last year.

it is really hard to explain, but surreal theatrical actions in warm summer nighs appear to have a certain magic, there is no other term to call it. even if you do not watch the plays you can at least check the music, often classical or electronic, mostly far away from mainstream...
some festivals were ruined by rain in the last years, this year looks good. well i hope to see you there!

theater-an-der-ruhr.de/reihen/weisse-naechte-2013

sichtwerk ist also important to me. it always feels like a glimpse of the future of art and design, even if a lot of the future won´t be as radically designed as presented. it is always great to to discover visual positions of someone who wants something...
my visit last year triggerd my fascination for the SANAA buidling and was a great inspirtion for making the 'quadrangle' video. the quadrangles (a kind of wall/window surrounded balconies on the inside) fit perfectly into my concept.

sichtwerk.org

'quadrangle' (2013). even as it appears very simple (and it is supposed to be) it was a technical challange. i hope to present it in the 2014 solo show.

2013-07-05 rejected roses of the lippe region | entry by sven

it was like a boost for my idea and self-confidence as an artist: the kunstwerk lippe had chosen my work for the big group show. 'roses (after richter)' was like an impact, it failed to win but it was believed to be close, anyway, it became one of the works I am known for. summing it up, I am still thankful for the chance to be elected for the 2010 exhibition and the artwork has already started its own career. i guess, a lot of things went right here. i remember the art show and the festival around it, we spent some days in bielefeld and enjoyed being around in the lippe region.

the art show was believed to come up every two years, so we wanted to be prepared for 2012, even as it turned out to be 2013 in the end. michaela and me discussed numerous concepts, dealing with fiddler beetles (rosenkäfer) and sleeping beauty, i had the idea of a photographic tableau of a hugging couple in a flower shop. the new title of the show turned out to be "rosebook instead of facebook" so i came up with 'everything is coming up roses'. escorted by text, i still think my idea was good but not brilliant, actually. michaela on the other hand came up with a more complex piece in context and production: an inherited cloth showing mendel´s law using the lippe rose. red and a yellow pentagons merge to the lippe rose in the hybrid versions. honestly it is one of the best embroidery pieces i have seen for years (trust me, I have seen a few).

to cut a long story short, our concepts and pictures returned in one envelope (!) leaving us quite frustrated and pissed. well, do not get me wrong, i am not a bad loser and i am old enough to be rejected, i do enough shows, i am fully booked during the opening weekend and the time of the 2013 roses show, honestly i am quite glad that I do not have to care about that. my work would not have been added to my portfolio if there would have not been a commission like this. what i do not understand is how the jury could sort out michaela´s work. i do not have to support her anyway, she is doing her own stuff and i do not comment the art related activities. apart from her, the newly for the show produced work is now without any audience, what really annoys me. this is a piece in need to be exhibited, and it must be seen. i am not working as a curator recently, but i would like to place it somewhere, it is in need to be public.

so turning from the things that did not happen to the things happening, this sunday the kunsthaus troisdorf will close the 'AKT' exhibition with one of my works, as i did not have the chance to see it so far (mostly because of the 'imaginary black forest' how and related activies) i want to join the finissage. I hope to see you there. plus: michaela best will do a solo show this september in mülheim, supported by AESTATE. you will have the chance to see some outstanding stuff… well, still a lot happenening!

rejected: 'everything is coming up roses' (2011-2013)

2013-06-22 it´s been a great time, thank god i´m out of here | entry by sven

well, nothing new at the wrecking site. we just stepped by some weeks ago and this is what it looks like recently. according to rumours the barber shop refused to leave before time, now, as yu see it is gone and the wreckage is gone, too.

somehow it is funny, because there is not only nothing, the is a hole left which is somehow even more pushing strange feelings, like going further down than nothing.

well, this seems to be the point where you cannot crack it down any further. to be honest i am excited what it will look like when the supermarket building shows up.

have a close look: somewhere there must have been my bed one year aga. whenever we drive by i realized myself saying the same sentence: "it´s been a great time, thank god i´m out of here." in retrospective my student years were great. growing up means that you cannot go back following a romanticized memory.
so and this is what it looks like.

time lapse: to be continued...

2013-06-17 'b.a.t.l.' aftermath: smokers outside the pub doors | entry by sven

last saturaday i have finally managed to come up with the long awaited 'b**tards at the lake' dj set at anyway after talking about it and planning for months now. i had great fun, i made some new guests enter the anyway, my plae-to-be since 2006, and i was allowed to bring some rare and strange sounds to the pub once again.

as i was coming up with a lot of effort in advertising the evening (this is my first "live" performace this year) the was still pace to be filled. sure, the warm summer wheather and the long days may make the people go outside, and of course, their may be people who simply cannot stant what i play. but the reason for empty chairs seems to be another one:

since may, smoking in pubs is prohibited in nrw. being a non-smoker (honestly an ex-smoker) i appreciate the smoke-free atmosphere. but this is not the happy end of the story. this is the beginning of another problem: smokers must step outside to smoke, well, some tend to stay at home. all the pubs which have been here for decades are now endagered of closing, caused by missing guests. so, where is my benefit of a smoke-free pub, which is closing. what do i prefer? a smoker pub or a non-smoker pub which does not exist???

there is no easy answer to it, i´m not telling you what to think. i simply think it is unfair to legalize and sell cigarrettes with tax while forbidding people to smoke in places which had been made for it. you make the wrong people pay the bill here. if you actually want to save people from consuming tabacco, you have to prohibit the sale of it. the current solution is simply destroing places of culture and community without any effect of better heath.
we have a law which has failed. let´s kick it before it kicks out the pubs. there must be a better way!?

well, after this somehow political statement and my expression of feeling uncomfortable how things are handled recently, i would like to pass on the impression above, shot by michaela best.
dj kent granyon and i want to do a set together in future have a look at the website of the anyway, and step in!

2013-06-11 'b**tards at the lake' dj set at anyway this saturday | entry by sven

there is a lot going on these days and i do not find the time to report. well the opening of I.B.F. was great and i am thnakful because it turned out to be what it was supposed to be: great fun, spending time with a lot of great people and at least planning future projects. there will be the time to tell more soon.

next saturday i will finally perform the 'b**tards at the lake' dj set at anyway, another project on schedule and planned for months now. it ssurprisingly fits perfect into the I.B.F. context, once again the medium shows that thinks are not what they are supposed to be but they fit anyway. so why do you think that the original perception of a picture, a fact or a song is supposed to be the right one or at least the most genious one?

postmodernism means to accept the inability to create new stuff but offers the material to mix up and combine anew - to create something new.
well, why shouln´t you dance to it?

i hope to see you satuday night at the anyway, it is going to be a very rare, special and funny night, i hope to see you there! (if you like to, you can visit the ìmaginary black forest'/'el secreto del mal' exhibition at clowns&pferde gallery first, when they close around eight, you can come over to teh anyway, just two minutes away...)

2013-05-31 spring shows (you should be outside) | entry by sven

well, checking the date of the journal made me realize time is up for another entry. there is not very much to say recently, chasing time and condition.
it is busy again, but with some lazy days within.
above you see im in the boijman van beuningen museum, rotterdam, a day trip to a place ususally visited on our way home from hollidays.

actually i´m writing this post to complain about my time management, too less time in the museums, too less time outside. well, here is the schedule, two shows are coming up next week, check out the news articles to come up. this is an oppotunity to make art shows and spent the days outside.

2013-05-02 now or never, the image will not wait for you | entry by sven

yesterday i finally managed to return to haltern am see to relax a little in the woods and to take some pictures. i have been there exactly four years ago, i remember the moss on the forest´s ground, the tall pines and the fire tower, of course. getting there for the first time in 2009 was quite striking, guess i must have remembered the fire tower from my childhood (or just thought I would remember) finding it again deep in the woods was a great discovery. unfortunately the little space around it was occupied by drinking and grilling families.

well, all the this returning to magic places left me a little bit disappointed, the fascination of the first time was, everything i was able to capture last time was gone, actually impossible to find or to imagine. once again i have learned about the power of photography, time and mood. things have to fit together to generate a picture. wherever you are, leaving and returning means to find something different instead.

above you see the tower as processed to my 2009 piece "fire tower". i remember that it was difficult to find the right angle, because it is surrounded by trees and not easy to get into the picture anyway. you are always to close or there are too many trees in front of you.

this is the picture i have taken yesterday, it is more a snapshot of it as we were approaching, once again occupied by strange families, only drinking…

michi did a some goods shots of me in the woods, surprisingly they work together as merged versions (see to picture). somehow it looks like i am wandering in my own imaginary black forest, well i am actually still thinking a lot about it and the selection of work and the dvd production. cross your fingers. click for larger version of this great picture!

2013-04-22 art cologne #47: great names & tattoo rock | entry by sven

after returning quite disappointed from my last year´s visit to the art cologne, i was confronted a few times with the question why i was returning every year. indeed, i´m critical and probably in a bad mood sometimes, even for me it is hard to find good art, whether it is there or not. still, the day ticked (and the parking ticked) is ridiculously high but that won´t stop from going there, but actually it forces me to go alone.

well, there are some views and photographic rituals done every year. and to sum it up even before giving some views on great names and personal impressions, i have to admit that it was good fair. but it was coined by big names for me, even if i´m searching for fresh approches.. for me there have not been new discoveries or surprises, but is was great in general and i want to return next year. no matter what the ticket will be about.

the julia stoschek collection offered some video pieces of the collection, a great way to show video art without thinking about the price. the whole fair is made to sell things primarily, not to present stuff, this is what I have learned by now. the collection show even expanded over an old mirrored staircase (as you can see) showing the mark lackey video loop of koons´ bunny as surrounded by a camera. actually one of my favorite works I discovered right at the start.

wim delvoye is always delivering great houmur, painted buzz saw blades are older but still great, next to tattooed pig skin framed showing disney´s fairytale protagonists in pornographic action. It is impressive how many layers in meaning you will find due the combination of material, technique and motive.

more multi-layers: julian opie delivers an interesting form of a video an still image. his vectorized tilted image landscapes appear 3d and moving simultaneously. you might say it is a cheap effect, well, it is, but there is a lot more next to it. a great way of expanding the medium.

the v1 gallery represents asger carlsen in the new positions area. his work is technically perfect and really teasing. he makes it look easy like snapshots, but I know how much post-production there is within. the understatement in arrangement makes the image look more authentic. seeing his works on the wall is a must.

kompakt records celebrated their 20th anniversary with a bar and a chill out room. i realized wolfgang voigt being around and remembered my judgment on his latest release in intro´s "platten vor gericht". i often feel bad if I do not like other peoples work and state it, well, you are free to hate what i do. but you don´t have to, of course.

more music: tim berresheim told me in 2010 during the release party of his solo work "studies for future blues" that a band version is supposed to come up. now, three years later he managed to come up with a band called "tattoo rock" performing live and releasing the vinyl at a-musik. a fantastic event and a great venue to perform in. unfortunately, i do not have a record player. anyway, i am more in the weirdness of "studies for future blues". he is keeping it exiting, what would be the next step? check out newamerika.us

2013-04-12 final break-up and long-term projects | entry by sven

as i try to document the wrecking of my former home from time to time we have reacehed the level of ground now, well, the basement is left and about to be erased, but here is nothing houselike anymore to be photographed. lets´s see what comes up, i´ll be there frome time to time.

the picture above appears quite ironic, the plate next to the former way is still there, the houses are allready gone. everything is crushed to tiny stones, like tearing old paper apart.

i usually try to hit the same angle like the google streetview car, i guess here i´m pretty close to it and it is scary how different these two pictures look like.

an unusual backside view. the next line of houses have a pretty good view on the building site now. i won´t get jealous about it, i´m sorry for them. let´s see.

at least i have made a large wrecking site panorama merge together of three pictures, click it for larger view. actually, this is not an artwork, it´s a document. it will look pretty different in a few months. thank god, we have saved this beautiful landscape!

that´s a funny story: in september 2011 oscar ledesma gave a birthday party in is garden, we had the idea of making an art show called IMAGINARY BLACK FOREST (see 2011-09-10 'imaginary black forest' for next summer | entry by sven). we talked about it again and again, yesterday he have finally fixed a month for the show at his gallery. well, the show is coming up this summer! isn´t that great?

IMAGINARY BLACK FOREST will feature videos from AESTATE of the last months, they somehow fit perfectly into that scheme. we are working on it and i hope we will come up with a DVD edition for you!
by the way, we have aded some videos to the video directed site, have a look over here. to be updated...

2013-04-03 new adventures at kuno park, EGGXPO memories | entry by sven

as promised and sceduled for months we made our visit to the EGGXPO and it was a great coming home again. it is always a great way to spend easter, to watch art, hang around at the atelier and meet people that you promise to meet more often...

i won´t tell to much about the EGGXPO now, we have been aked to paricipate in future exhibitions and festivals, which is great and will have to be puzzled into our schedules. we are all slaves to the schedule, aren´t we?

even when the wheather was quite cold and grey, i spent some time in the garden. as it is quite big and full of sculptures i like to call it 'kuno park'. there is a certain poject i am working on since 2011 when i took some flash illuminated photographs in the dark within this 'park'. once again i want to do a quite scry video playing on the connection beween photo and video, time and primary numbers, expecation and fear.
well, let´s see how far i´ll take it. long time projects may fade out. (may 'the long wait' video project may be turned into a catalogue with an audo cd instead... what do you think?)

the 'kuno park' allways draws me in. the old damaged brain and really impressing: the wagon. unfortunately this is not public, well you should be there for the next EGGXPO, maybe you´ll have the opportunity to visit the park, it´s sculptures, maybe in great wheather...

a snapshot into the showroom, great response and below wolfgang van triel´s corner.

find out more on his website:
wolfgangvantriel.tumblr.com

light up bright fires: easter sturday needs a fire, i´m getting more interested in traditional rituals. well, a funny stury, the tennis club members did not really show interest in their own fire, foreigners like us did.
hm, anyway, the fire was great and we have interesting video material!

2013-03-28 EGGXPO feature: van triel´s accidental beauty | entry by sven

after my participation at the EGGXPO in 2011 i am proud to be connected to the "bubble" and its actions. i did not make it last year and for different reasons i´m not participating this year, but there is a new tradition to have a closer look and to support the event and its artists. last year i focused on klaus jost and kelbassas panoptikum and gave some ideas on their work. (2012-04-05 EGGXPO feature: a night at kelbassas panoptikum & 2012-04-07 EGGXPO feature: klaus jost's humour beyond the rust).

this year i´d like to draw your attention on wolfgang van triel, traditional EGGXPO artist, not participating in 2011, so it took some time until he really appeard on my screen. you might even remember his contribution to the last "offene galerie" at galerie143 in december and january.

van triel´s photography appears simple, leaving out all the effects which would be possible. his approach is calm and honest, two attributes which cannot be found often in contemporary photography. he works where he lives, the dirty corners are familiar, but there is always more to discover - for the artist and the viewer.

you might think of his series showing the location of the loveparade tragedy. once agin, he does not tell his opinion but he offers you to find your own. even these ugly and desperate places appear in a beautiful composition. there´s beauty in the accidental and ugly world you can explore - if you follow van triel´s offer for a calm look.

a
bove you see HinterhofBaum, a recent work combining all the restrained strength of the virtual language he uses.
personally, i like the idea of using scenery that is around you to explore what you want to say instead of visiting foreign places to show dramatic pictures without having an idea of the place and what you want to say anyway. even when my work is coined by post-production, i am impressed by a contemporary position without all these edits to generate a "true" image. as you know, i don´t believe in true images, but van triel´s photographs are closest to it.

based upon video material by jochen schweizer you can have a look at my participation and the "kuno park" at great weather. further documentries are expected.

the next group show is in the making, after two years i´m happy to be in the d-52 again. above you see my "roses (after richter)" as shown in 2011 at the EGGXPO. hope to see you at the EGGXPO, and hope to see you in düssldorf this may!

2013-03-22 the change and the memory | entry by sven

after a longer break i feel that it´s time again to write a little to signalize the world and myself that things are going on. being older means to realize that certain events divide your memories into the „before“ and the „afterwards“, while you are living the this „afterwards” and may dream of a time before a change.

again and again i am discovering my fascination for the medium of photography, it really is able to capture the „before“ and the „afterwards“, like two parallel timelines in a frozen way. unfortunately, the medium only captures the surface, not what it may mean.
above you see the “old place” as i like to call it, the house where i used to live. recently we try to check by whenever we are around and standing in front of the ruins it appears surrealistic, like a giant sculpture mirroring my inner feelings. i lived in the house in the middle which was surprisingly erased at first. recently the right house is also gone.

a
bove you see another google streetview memory form older times, and below the night version of half-erased. fortunately i have also taken a picture of the “home wrecking”, my former home as a gap between the ruins. no way back, anyway…
it is strange, i don’t want to put personal stuff into my work, but it fact, once again and however, change and transition are on my mind recently.
let´s be patient and full of faith.

update 2013-03-24: the wrecking happens quite quickly, as i have expected, the scenery looks different when i have posted it. well, this is the status from our ysterday´s visit, klick the piczures for slightlylarger versions. to be continued...

the next group show is in the making, after two years i´m happy to be in the d-52 again. above you see my "last effort" series as shown in 2011, this year you´ll again find four photographs and a video in the show, unfortunately no new works. anyway, a new chance to meet the future classics!

2013-02-19 run, daisy, run / concrete ball | entry by sven

this february appears quite dark, still spending most of the free time on sleeping, facing different little aches and pains which are summed up really grinding me. there is no place to escape, except into work which does not make it better.

maybe thats why daisy has drawn my attention, a horse who live about hundred years ago. you know my fascination for the medium and it´s contradictions. "daisy" is based upon serial photographs by muybridge of the horse galloping enabeling a "motion picture".
i have taken two frames from it and made a digital version of it pretending to show a cloth swinging. i thought there is a lot of contradiction in it: hundred-year-old material mounted in a set-up which was enabling artificial movement even hundreds of years before as build up in a state-of-the-art computer generated video. you can see the ambition of pretending movement but you cannot be convinced.
that´s what video is all about: a gate to escape (here even with a horse running but unable to leave the scene) but rediculously simple and without magic, throwing you back to where you actally are.

well, here i´m with autobiographical work again.

here is another new piece: a big concrete ball on a street. it was inspired by a blog entry i found on the net. someone posted jeff wall´s "concrete ball" and explained how stupid work and artist must be. well, that´s a common way to talk about art when you have no idea of it combnined with your own frustration.

fortunately, someone commented the entry and explaind the importance and impact of wall for contemporary photography without echoing the unkind tone of the original post.

somehow, this whole thing impressed me, a simple image could trigger such aggression. somehow it reminded me of my fascination for art, i was interested because i did not undersatnd and i felt that there was something to understand.
i thought i should make my own concrete ball, now you can hate this one, too, you can call it banal and stupid, but the work knows better and even when it is quite knew it already knows all the things you could say about it.

2013-02-09 matthias tränkle exhibition / depot greetings | entry by sven

yesterday, the clowns und pferde gallery in essen opened their third show featuring matthias tränkle and his romantic views on dismal sides of the city of essen.
having lived in this city for ten years, it actually feels like home, and after moving away i am still there very often. more than every other city it appears extreme in aesthetic issues, beautiful and dreamy on the one hand, ugly as hell on the other, maybe always echoing the opposite in itself. tränkle focusses on the ugly sides. the power of his photographs does not lie in a sophisticted view on lower social layers but on the dreaming of beauty bound into every scene. therefor he explores a sublime beauty, a strage feeling of home and at least a true declaration of love for the city.

assmbling to this vernissage was scheduled for weeks when we accidentally we stumbeled in the pre-election and arranging discussions, somehow i found myself in a productive discussion concerning motives and their arrangement. matthias tränkle was looking for some fresh views and options in creating or avoiding an order. well, i was reminded of jörg sasse´s speicher, a big amount of pictures to be ordered and reorderd by certain features and keywords, so we were looking for groups just to figure out that this way of ordering would take the focus off the motives. visiting the show was a must, not only to see how it would turn out...

the final hanging looks like a good compromise somewhere between avoiding order generally and forming a group if necessary.

maybe you should have a look on it yourself...

gallerist bianca wickinghoff and oscar ledesma add terretory and time. lightboxes showing satellite photographs of the earth like abstract paintings and the earthview based installation showing a new view from the earth randomly after eight seconds.

michaela best took this picture with some tiny snow hills next to the gallery, reminding me of a show in the cold and dark north. living in iceland would feel like this...?

here i am without a current show. after the closing of galerie143´s offene galerie we managed to bring back the works yesterday. and we had some time to chat with simone and eat up her cake. what a day! above you see me taking a picture of a mirroring bowl in ability to capture the whole room. a funny try.

all that remains from a show, wrapped up waiting to be taken home again.

and here is blown away, waiting to return to the hammes collection. in the background you see the bowie-collab also waiting for a new place on the wall. i really need to hang some pictures, but i am afraid of white walls.

2013-02-04 blogger´s paradise, life is how you write it | entry by sven

all this writing get´s more and more exciting - and serious. as you know, i am a proud member of the NRW-bloggerkollektiv and this made me think about the ritual of sharing thoughts in public again.

for me, there are two key targets: at first keeping the website going, giving the illusion that things are going on, that i am working on the next strike while you can have a look over my shoulder. secondly, i have discoverd it as a very personal and helpful tool to stay sane. (and i really have to take care of myself these days.) when i look at older entries, i have to realize that i go through the same emotions and sorrows every year, that i mourn about too less time and too much stress, well, that´s actually boring to read and turns me into a worse person. i have to take care. but this coin has a shiniy side: psychologists have found out that reading other peoples blogs can depress you because you witness people (you do not know personally) having a great time, while you sit alone in your hole with a laptop. if you turn this around you will have a great time. posting great events, me in cool exhibitions and posing in the woods making a fool of myself is great and helps me to have a good day and to remeber a good feeling. let us be honest: we all need a therapy, this is my way of doing it. cheap and effective.

all you need is the ability to be enthusiastic for smaller things, getting attention and having thrown a small stone upon the mountain that is the world.
so i am very pleased to have placed another pic of me on a dutch blog with the ability to get into a museum again:

bregje van der laar´s blog is collecting self-portraits, i just contributed the mash-up version of a diptych i had produced for the museum folkwang last winter. above you see it installed at the museum, this time we have the opportunity to be shown in the museum boijmans van beuningen in rotterdam, netherlands. well, i wont be so lucky twice, but the fun is worth it.
have a look yoursef:

recently we have a strange situation: for the first time in two years i am without an art show. there are one or two things i am working on for a certain show, but nothing is save. i thought i might be a good period to look back? not too long, you know, the next show is coming up!

2013-01-13 boy with a coin, flipped for pseudo-options | entry by sven

it has to be with winter and the dark days. the start of the year makes me unsatisfied, unhappy somehow, empty. i feel i am responsible for setting up and fix new projects while i fear it is not going on. after creating and exhibitioning so much over the last two years, i am facing empty slots, there could be a pause, or the end of my career?
the studio works brilliant, we have control on a aspects concerning production and management, but recently the target for these busy work is not on screen.

yesterday i was out for a walk finding a golden coin in my pocket. actually it is no currency but a metal piece form a washing machine or something else. i started to flip the coin for fun, actually more for the sound it makes while spinning. hm, a coin with two sides would be helpful to decide between two options, i realized there are no options in what i do recently. flipping it does not make sense. i remembered a strange movie, michi broght up when i was ill some years ago.

"rosencrantz & ruildenstern", two characters from "hamlet", discover (next to other things) that flipping a coin always leads to the same result: the head side is up. how possible would it be to have the same side seventy times in a row? well. it is possible, no doubt about that, but here the the characters discover even more, the strange behavior of things can only mean that they are fictional themselves.
well, i don´t know what this may mean for myself, except that others take control when your fictional - or forgotten. maybe both.

as i like to name journal posts after songs to make them appear more intersting and teasing, here is the piece, which will stay in you head forever.

a fortune cookie promises strage experiences for happyness. well, that leaves me worried...

there is a lot going on these days, slowly but constant. we are collecting ideas and do programmings and we are releasing re-edited old stuff. heavy stuff. more videos to come up, unexpected stuff, honestly!
this project was exiting, and it will be exciting. did i mention AESTATE are coming up with a new piece soon?

2013-01-03 sparkler installations: repetition makes a tradition | entry by sven

happy new year, everyone. once again it´s time to realize rituals and their phenomenon of becoming. over the last decades i have developed a tradition for the upcoming new year: instead of buying fireworks i was more into creating chain reactions with sparklers. this tradition originally started back in the late nineties with my friend and bandmate jay. later we created these sparkler installations with different friends, among growing fascination and quantity.

above you see the perfect piece from last new year's eve, it looks like a fence surrounding a tetrahedron. in theory, this should work perfectly and light up one after another, well, as usually, it needed some help sometimes. this year i realized, that this is really a tradition right now, started in the past, repeated often enough and in need to be proceeded in the future.

above you see a reconstructed image of the first documented sparkler installation from new year´s eve 2003.
it was quite small and build into a flower box but it was supposed to look like a gibson flying v.
well, that must have been about 60 seconds sparkle fun...

above you see the video of last years new year´s eve, the construction shown at the top. running about seven and a half minutes, we have really develloped. i hope to use it as an AESTATE video. int´s not really carrying sense, but pure fun.

nye 2011 with a smaller installation, looking like a roof. it was later processed and turned into a video piece as "barn truss fire" reminding of simple special effects in an old movie shocking with semi-dramatic action: the roof is on fire...

just another cool image michi took in a carpark. if a carpark looks like that, what would the museum look like? yeah, düsseldorf. yes, we watched gursky. no, we are not rich.
